Yard Care

3rd cut of the year last night. Drained the sprinklers for these 3 days below freezing, turning them back on tomorrow. Youngest daughter’s 3rd birthday party today with friends/family over.

Killin it brother. My daughter’s 3rd birthday party is next Saturday after the spring game. Will probably have a couple people over for the game so early AM workout, quick mow and trim, get the grill hot by about 10 AM. Game time. Wind down early after a long, great day

Anyone use this before?
10-lb Quick Kill Outdoor Lawn Insect Control https://www.lowes.com/pd/AMDRO-Quick-Kill-Outdoor-10-lb-Lawn-Insect-Control/999956666

Had to go to a couple different lowes but got 50 bags for $5 a pop. Figured it with a shot at that price. Should hold me over for a year.
If my math is right, I’m going to put it on most over an acre and will do 4 pounds/1000 sqft.
So 12 bags 4x a year should do.
Then 2 extras for spot treatments.

What are you trying to get rid of? Usually for ants and roaches and stuff, some type of bait works best, rather than trying to nuke the whole yard.

Ants and spiders really.
Got a couple fire ant hills

Omaha peoples.

Sprinklers are on, looking for a tad bit of guidance as I can't remember 100% of last year.

Given it's only April, going to set them to 15 minutes per zone, 7 zones, M-W-F-SU, once a day at 4 AM. Probably set to 20 minutes late May/June 1. Think I was at 20 minutes per zone after they were installed last June.

That a good strategy this time of year?

Eat a Sam's Club pack of tuna and place them around the yard to get your timing right.

If you have a zone with a sloped yard, I like to break up the watering into 2 waterings, same in the summer months.

Going to put this down here this weekend…. Going to get almost 1/3rd a pound of iron (per 1k sq ). Grass gonna get DARK

Got the dogs out for a walk shortly after the sprinklers were done this morning. Concrete wet, light shiny layer of water on top of the grass blades. Beautiful. Will be ready for an early morning spring game mow and trim.

Mowed last night since weather is about to get going again for a few days. A little choppy on the trimming due to lack of time but is what it is.

Grass was really long given the amount of growth we've had due to the recent storms. My question is, is bagging really worth the effort? Grass is nice and thick and green right now, but there is a loose layer on top due to so much grass. Seems like extra effort that could just be solved by mowing more often/planning better around the weather.

Bagging is going to give you a cleaner cut. If you’re leaving visible grass after mulching you are either cutting too much off, mowing when it’s wet or your mower sucks.

Yard care fucking sucks. Mowing and trimming fucking suck. The only redeeming quality is the beers you get to imbibe in afterwards. Those beers are up there with airport beers.

recommendations for shitty soil?

I cant seem to get grass seed to grow no matter what I do. The area where I do have grass is think and beautiful but Its patches right now.
I had my soil tested by that Sunday company that suppose to cater to your lawn/soil but It doesnt seem to be working. Ive been this house for 4 years now.

This is what my result were:
11% Sand | 58% Silt | 30% Clay

It was for sure too much off, but I didn't have much of a choice. It's been great the other recent times with the new mower. Was more of just curious if bagging was worth the effort in the one off times like we've had in the last week. I should have mowed the Thursday before, to avoid it, but just didn't.
