Zavier Betts

If he ends up making back, it will be as a scholarship.
Meh…personally I am open to him getting back on scholly but he has to prove, for the second time, that he wants it and is committed.

I would rather give somebody a scholarship that wants to be here and is committed the first time around.

My guess is that Rhule agrees with you. That's why it's being handled the way it is. If it is a semester long grind to get straight academically to play, that will say a great deal about his level of motivation to play football, I would think. If he really doesn't want to play, at some point he'll say, "why I am putting myself through this?"
This is absolutely what I think should happen.

You want it...prove it.

I also believe him having The Vegan as his WR coach didn't help. Not sure having a peer as a coach will be much helpful BUT it looks like he's willing to take that chance.

Scholly vs. Walk-on:

If he's going to participate in spring football, we will have a scholarship available for him. We are over the 85 number currently and have to shed schollys at some point, but that includes the incoming freshmen who won't be here until next fall. We won't have to have those extra scholarships processed and down to 85 until August.

So we'd be fine putting him on scholarship for the spring semester. If he goes through spring ball, the coaching staff will know his level of commitment and know if he's worth squeezing him into the 85 in the fall. There's almost no downside here for a potentially big payoff.

I think that’s fair.

Not sure that is true. Just because a guy uses his eligibility doesnt mean he goes off scholarship right away. I believe there could still be guys on scholarship for spring semester that arent playing next fall, but I could be wrong.

I think your concerns have merit. Right now we are at 94 for the fall if no one leaves. A lot of those guys aren't in school yet and aren't actually counters yet. They are guys who signed NLIs and aren't enrolling early. I am not sure we can actually have more than 85 counters, but I could be wrong

if you take the 94 - which includes transfers and the entire 23 memb3er signing class, subtract the 15 recruiting class guys who are not early enrolling, we appear to be at 79 right now. This is net of portal entries, who lose their scholarship immediately if the school chooses to do that.

Does that include guys that declared for draft who may still be in school this semester. Or guys that are done with football that still may be in class this spring? I believe they still occupy scholarships.

NOT SURE - I CAN LOOK

ALMOST CERTAINLY YES UNLESS THEIR ELIGIBILITY IS EXHAUSTED - THOSE GUYS ARE OFF THE LIST. NOT SURE IF SOMEONE IS A COUNTER ONCE THEIR ELIGIBILITY IS EXHAUSTED

There are very few players I would count as totally committed to a school anymore. The portal and NIL have made almost all a free agent. Unfortunate situation.

With that in mind, I would give Betts a second chance. The fact he wants back in speaks a little more commitment imho.

Guys who have declared are off the list
I dont believe they have to be. Garrett Nelson and others may have declared but he could still be in school working out on campus and working towards his degree. I think in most cases if a player chooses the scholarship is for the full year, even though he is no longer part of the team. Again, I may be wrong

I don't want a dude on the team if he has to be begged & pushed all the time to get motivated.

If Betts has rediscovered his passion for playing, fantastic. That's what second chances are for. But if he's out there just because some other people know he has the physical ability, & think they can push the right buttons on someone who doesn't have an intrinsic motivation or love for the game of football, then pass, and give the scholly to someone who cares.
That sounds all well and good, but sometimes the juice is worth the squeeze to get playmakers on the field. I’m not saying you can have half your team be like that, but just a couple the coaches can make work I think. And if we can get him on the field he is definitely an upgrade at receiver over what we have available right now, Right?

The counters are done by an academic year basis. Transfers are counters for the academic year of the award. You are a counter in the year you finish your eligibility and as if you declare for the draft that year.

I think that means that I would have to add anyone who has exhausted eligibility to the 79 unless they were no longer receiving aid this semester. That would be hard to figure out.
