Wisconsin is favored in 11 games this year

I remember when Gary Andersen tried the spread there...I think it went great.
Pretty sure Gary had to keep the core components of Wisconsin’s offense & was able to blend in some of the Air Force stuff. Alvarez was still dictating how shit was run

Seems like a recurring theme, every year, Wisconsin is a bit overrated and will fall some.

I honestly don't see Wisconsin any higher than 3rd in the West this year, new coach in his first year and the weren't great last season, there was a reason that Chryst was fired.

Final 2023 Big Ten West Standings:

1. Nebraska
2. Cockeye
3. Illinois
4. Wisconsin
5. Purdue
6. Minnesota
6. Northwestern

Gary did one very good thing when he went to Wisconsin. He was smart enough to bring Aranda as the DC which helped cover for the offense.

My read is people are putting a lot of stock into their defense. People forget they still had an incredible defense last year, and #2ndChoice is a defensive guy so they could land on their feet. Then you have the hype of Phil Longo taking control over what was seen by many as a simply old style offense that needed upgrading. Nebraska fans know first hand that doesn't always go well. Many others don't see it that way.

Wisconsin’s defense was also helped out a lot by a ball control offense.

That's something else that not a lot of people think about. They look into the fine details like who's coming back, how good the coordinators were at their last stop, but forget to ask the basic big picture questions like how it's all going to work at a place like Wisconsin.

I don't think they have as drastic of a change in offensive philosophy but it will at least struggle early. As you said the question is whether the defense can win early games. Defense should be pretty good.

I think #2ndChoice is a great coach, but it will be interesting to see what Longo does? Is he going to go all pass happy or will he lean more on the run game atleast early on since Wisconsin isn’t really made for a spread offense at this point.

Are you thinking they aren't actually running an air raid system?

My guess is he's going to run the air raid because that's what he knows. #2ndChoice is a defensive guy, so I don't really see him sticking his fingers into the offense much.

No. I don't think their former offense was as different personnel wise. Partially because its easier to get missing personnel with the portal.

Usually a defensive coach will dictate certain things the OC does from a game management aspect. It will be interesting to see how Rhule does compared to #2ndChoice since we could have also had #2ndChoice.
