Bump.

Having a competent play caller does wonders.

Satterfield was never it.
Still don't think it was a play caller issue. But I do think it was a Satterfield issue. Our execution was much better against Wisconsin, best it has been this year. Some of it could be play calling plays that we execute better, but most of it is just players doing what they are suppose to. What ever Holgorsen is doing in practice so that the players execute in games better worked. Lots of plays work when players do their jobs. Raiola looked great, made good quick decisions, the last 2 months he has not looked confident or decisive, Holgorsen has righted Raiola's play quickly.

Kudo's to Rhule for replacing Satterfield with Holgorsen, his impact has already been noticed.

Not sure how much of it’s true, but supposedly they simplified the playbook. Whatever Dana said, it lit a fire on the offenses ass to make them execute better. Plus I wonder if Rhule didn’t put the rest of the offensive assistants on notice for lowering the standard or he realized his standard was low. Now if they can fix the defensive side of the ball, we’d be cooking with gas.

The frat that is the coaching profession always seems to allow morons to fall upwards & I do think holgerson has improved the playcalling, u can tell just by watching him work the run game/LOS which was pretty predictable under Satt.

Holgerson is probably a better coach cuz he knows how to get Raiola to understand what’s going on vs being blind & timid with Satt & it goes a long ways with players executing when they respect the coach or understand there’s consequences for not doing what’s asked, like Fidone getting yanked or perimeter blocking.

there were some quotes from Rhule early in the season about how they didn't want to simplify things for Raiola just because he was a freshman

it makes we wonder how much of a problem that was overall. with the transfer portal you're always going to be relying on players coming in and contributing in their first year, so having a simpler system is probably going to be important going forward

Yeah it's weird bc Holgorsen is using Satterfield's playbook (with a couple of his own tweaks sprinkled in).

It's definitely these things:
  • Recognition of talent
  • Recognition of players' understanding
  • Recognizing what plays work with what personnel
  • Ability to speak w QB and communicate with and coach him
  • Ability to say to players "fuck you, you can do better"
  • Strong belief in what timing/tempo is acceptable
  • Know when to call what plays
  • Communicate swagger and confidence to your players
Holgorsen has all this and Satterfield didn't. I hate to be that harsh on Satterfield, but it's true.

If we're being honest, Holgorsen is probably a top 5 OC in the country and we were able to pick him off the waiver wires when he wasn't doing anything. In fairness to Satt, DH is going to outshine 95% of any OC he would replace.

To be honest I don't have a whole lot of desire to be fair to Satterfield.

My point is, it's not his fault he sucks. It's really 100% Rhule's fault for hiring him.

The evidence was there at South Carolina that Satterfield sucked. He was getting run out of town there. I know he wasn't Rhule's first choice but he really should have found someone else.

Also, it seemed to me that the Jeff Sims thing was like 90-10Rhule's choice (he knew the GT coach etc). So Satt had to deal with a fuckin terrible QB in his first year as an OC at a program he didn't deserve to be at.

Satt didn't do anything different than be his normal bad self here. It's really on Rhule for hiring him and then sticking with him a 2nd year. You can't blame Satt for taking a $1.4m/yr job that he was not qualified for - we'd all do the same thing.

Let’s be honest, Satt doesn’t have it in him to be a prick and hold people accountable which is required to be a coach. He probably tries hard so people like him with the fear of having people hating him. Let’s hope he learned a few things from Dana and he’ll be successful wherever he goes next.

And Dana learned it from Leach. And Dana has 20 yrs of success to base his arrogance on.

Satt doesn't have this

I think a lot of our running game problem is that Dowdell just doesn't see holes well. Like Holgorsen said in his initial presser last week, the line is doing well and the holes are there, but our backs aren't hitting the holes.

So finally our running game looks good and who was the RB the majority of the time? Emmet Johnson.
It was noticiable when Dowdell came in. Lower his head and ram stright ahead into a pile, missing the crease that was three feet to his left. Yeah, he scored three touchdowns and looks like he's the short yardage back now, but in those cases maybe you want someone who is just going to lower their had and blast straight forward.

Naw. The play calling, actual play calls, sequencing of play calls and overall offensive scheme is SO much better with Holgs, that it is blindingly, glaringly, obvious.

Sure, some of the plays "are the same". I am sure they didn't scrap the playbook. And sure, Holgs came in and said "WTF are we doing here" to the players and their obvious effort and execution issues. So yeah - part of it is that the players are held more accountable, but that is not the biggest part. Players now know they have an OC who will put them in play calls which are much more likely to succeed, and that boosts their confidence, which was in the cellar. Pointing out things to DR and all of the offensive skill players that were obvious, but also obviously not being addressed well enough if at at all, helped the players see things they weren't in their own performances. But still, asking players to run square peg, round hole play calling by Satt game after game after game, while opposing DC's are LOLing and licking their chops, is not how you set players up to succeed.

But the actual play calling is not only better, but different. We have seen so many different plays and ways players are being used now, and it keeps defenses off balance. And also sets our players up to be successful. Shitterfield was beyond awful and set the whole offense back to a level that was pathetic.

I’m a total idiot, so could be way off here, but I feel like I’ve seen way more wham blocks on run plays the last two weeks then I can ever recall from the games Satt called. A lot of them have gone for big gains/TDs too.

Even our run plays are sequenced and called better. Players play better when a defense doesn't know what is coming 80% of the time. And yes, Satt getting sat, and Holgs taking the reins, has given all of the players a shot in the arm. Much, much more confidence now that they have a good play caller calling plays.

Still don't think it was a play caller issue
I generally agree with the idea that good execution will make play calling look great no matter the scheme.

BUT...The ratio of quick slant routes vs bubble screens have completely flipped and that was a HUGE difference last Saturday.
