Special Teams Coach Hot Board

We died (as a football power) a long time ago. The odds of ever getting back to a championship level, regardless of finances, are seemingly zero.

We have poured hundreds of millions into this program over the last 20 years. Where has it gotten us? This isn't about money. It is much deeper than that.
We still sell 100% of the tickets. Idc if blocks are purchased by corps or not. Still selling them. Still have a bunch of money coming in from individuals and businesses. We ain't dead.

Believe what you want.

"Alright everyone, I had a conversation with Coach Ek on a flight to Denver this morning.

He’s in-fact headed to LA right now to meet with USC. He said he hasn’t made any official decisions yet, but returning to Nebraska didn’t appear to be an option. When I asked about his motivation for leaving he said it simply came down to not wanting to coach only ST’a any longer - he wants a bigger role and to be part of the defense. He said this was the first time in his career that he’s only coached ST’s and he won’t be doing that again.

He said he felt helpless this past season having to just sit back and watch the defense fail.

He and his wife were very nice - I wished him the best of luck in the future, except for the times he plays against Nebraska."
Man this is just brutal if true
Especially with how GOD AWFUL our linebacker play was this past year
Kill me

Complete bollocks. Who the fuck talks all that to some stranger on a plane? And who the fuck doesn’t just take a direct flight if they’re making a move like that? Not a single self-respecting coach. Total arsewipe story.
To be fair there are no direct flights to LAX from Omaha or Lincoln

I’ve found myself less and less on the board lately as a result
It feels way whiny-er than it did even in the Frost tenure (2022 season notwithstanding - everybody was jumping ship at that point).

People are passing their whiny-ness off as sophisticated and skeptical.....but it really feels to me like a race to be "right" about Rhule. Like a bunch of people bet on Frost and he made them all look like idiots, so they don't want to get caught out again. So they're in a race to be one of the first ones saying Rhule will fail.

I'm not even saying they're wrong....I'm just saying it's miserable. The guy is definitely here at least 2 more years. That's roughly 700 more days of this. Why would you want to spend all 700 of those days reminding everyone that 'you called it' RE: Rhule failing. You don't get a prize for it! No one's mailing you a reward check for calling it.

Part of being a fan is the blind optimism and annual hope. Who would want to go to Wrigley Field as a Cubs fan for 81 games a year, telling everyone your own team sucks balls and should be sold to a billionaire in Boise, Idaho?? Sounds fuckin miserable to me.

This isn't a pro-Rhule post BTW. I'm just saying I don't want to spent the next 700 days reading these petty posts about who called it first and wins the prize of predicting Rhule's failure the best. It's dumb. You don't like the guy, we get it. You're predicting he'll get fired, we get it. You don't need to post the same version of that 100x/day. We understand. We get it.

So: we like what we’ve got in the RB room and we like what we’ve got at ST.

This just sounds like justification for failing to make an effort to make the team better.

Rhule is really proving to be someone other than we thought we were getting.

Oh to be a fly on the wall

"Hey coach, I turned your special teams from the country's worst to one of its best in one season. I noticed your linebackers play like absolute ass. I've coached LB before. Mind if I stay on at ST and help with LB too?"

"Hmm sounds like you're not fully committed to what we're building here bro. If/when you leave we're gonna replace you with 3 coaches and be even better"

The really fucked up part is that I read USC still has their ST guy and they don't even have a DC yet. I would think the new guy would want to pick his staff. Makes no sense right now.

Come back, sign your extension, get your big raise and see what next year brings.

or maybe it went down like this....

“Hey corch, I took your special teams from the worst in the country to legitimately good in one season. I’m not trying to overstep, not trying to grab power, and I’m perfectly happy staying in my lane. Linebackers aren’t my job, and I haven’t asked to make them my job.”

“Perfect. That’s exactly the kind of assistant we want—someone who improves his unit, doesn’t create imaginary turf wars, and understands how staff roles actually work. We’re not threatened by competence, and we’re not going to turn one departure into some dramatic culture battle.”

"Thanks corch...However, I am bat shit crazy and love moving from job to job. My dads been in a loony bin up in Togus and he burned my ear on a stove. He was making flapjacks. Thats probably why I act so crazy. So I'm gonna leave for USC."

I bet a lot of people won't get the reference in the last paragraph. But it is still fun to make shit up.

Anyone ever consider that despite Eckler being good at Special Teams, he might be a giant pain in the ass to have on staff and that's why he moves around so often?
If Rhule is making $7M a year to be a CEO type head coach, hard to have much sympathy if he can't deal with it

Like honestly he could be Mark Mangino wiping his ass with shower towels, if he puts out a top 25 special teams unit he's coming back

USC is hiring a guy to fix ST when they don’t even have an opening.

We decided to essentially leave our job open and rely on guys who, as I understand it, were around when the ST sucked and had to be fixed by the guy we’ve decided to not replace.

Seems like a legit plan.
