Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei offensive lineman Brandon Baker has locked in his commitment date and will announce on the 247Sports YouTube channel. Baker will commit on Sept. 24 at 6 p.m. PT (9 p.m. ET).

Baker is a five-star prospect, rated the No. 21 player nationally in the 247Sports Composite and No. 24 in the Top247.

“Sept. 24 is my birthday, so I felt like it was a good time to announce,” Baker said. “It has been a really fun process, but I have a good idea what I want to do and I’m ready to get this done.”

Baker still has an official visit set to Nebraska for Sept. 16. He also unofficially visited the Huskers multiple times this past offseason.

“I took two unofficial visits and loved it there,” Baker said. “I love the fan support, the atmosphere and I like what coach (Matt) Rhule is building. He’s a great coach and I think they’re going to be really good in the future.”

He officially visited Georgia, Ohio State and Texas back in June and has taken several unofficial visits to Oregon. At this time a year ago, the Ducks looked like a heavy leader but in recent months, the Buttguys and Longhorns have had most of the buzz.

“I liked all my visits but Ohio State was probably my favorite one,” Baker said. “I just really like the coaches there, coach Day and I’m very close with coach (Justin) Frye.

“He might be the OL coach I’m closest with and I really like the plan they have in place for me.”

The Longhorns have a lot of momentum and have done a great job recruiting Baker as well.

“Texas was a great trip, too, and I can definitely see myself there,” Baker said. “They have everything you need to be successful and I really like the overall fit and comfort level for me there.

“I have a really good relationship with coach (Kyle) Flood and when we talk, it means something. He’s a really good coach and he’s building a really strong offensive line. He thinks they’re putting something special together and he really wants me to be a part of that.”

Baker never officially visited Oregon but was always consistent in saying that shouldn’t be taken as a sign that his interest in the Ducks has wavered.

“I still like Oregon,” Baker said. “I actually wanted to go to their Saturday Night Live event at the end of this month, but I won’t be able to make it because we started practice.

“I’ve been to Oregon a ton and just didn’t feel the need to take an official visit when we only get so many weekends and I wanted to see some other schools that I hadn’t visited as much before.”

We had a chance to see Baker earlier this season and he looked very good. He has a prototype tackle frame at about 6-foot-5, 295 pounds and an 80-plus-inch wingspan. He's a fluid athlete who moves well, is technically sound and looks stronger and more physical than he did a year ago as well.

Nebraska visit still on schedule — for now

Baker has yet to take any visits this fall, and his only planned one right now is the official to Lincoln next weekend. If that stays on the books and he shows up at Nebraska, the Huskers have a chance with his decision a little more than a week later. However, Simmons believes they’re running behind as it stands now.

“I like where Texas is at, and Ohio State is very much in it,” he said. “You can’t ever rule out Oregon, and with the way recruiting is today, nothing is ever final. He still as of right now still has an OV set to Nebraska, and we’ll see if that actually takes place. Nebraska could be in this if he makes it to Lincoln, but right now I like where Texas sits with Baker nearing that decision.”

Husker commit Rex Guthrie expects quick recovery after injury; excited about direction of Husker defense

Guthrie had an injury last week but is upbeat about his recovery timetable with plans to enroll early.

PUEBLO, Colo.– Rex Guthrie wouldn't miss it.

Even though he'll have to hobble around to get to his stadium seat, the Husker commit will be there Saturday to see Nebraska play Colorado.

Can’t miss seeing his future Husker squad competing in his home state.

And while the hobbling is a nuisance for now, he’s upbeat about his recovery timetable.

Guthrie had his senior season for Heritage High School in Littleton cut short last week when he was in a pile and had his leg rolled up on with just a few minutes left in the game. The result was a dislocated ankle with a broken bone in his lower leg.

Despite the setback, Guthrie was in good spirits on Thursday as he rested his leg on a scooter before his Heritage team took the field. He expects to be walking on it in eight weeks and running in 12, which would set him up well when he heads to Nebraska as an early enrollee.

“I just can’t wait to get this cast off and start rehabbing, for sure,” he said. “I’m not really worried at all about getting there and all that because I know I’ll rehab fine and it will all work out.”

While a player never wants an injury, Guthrie is thankful to have his college plans set before it happened.

He clearly made an impression on Husker coaches this summer when at full speed – speed and explosiveness most can’t match.

"It meant a lot to me because I guess the stuff I see in myself, and my coaches and teammates really have seen in four years, Coach Rhule and his staff is really the first power five school to really see what everyone else (around here) sees in me."

In his junior season at Heritage, Guthrie had 117 tackles, including nine for loss. He also had 12 pass breakups and three interceptions.

When he showed up to a Husker summer camp this June, he wowed Nebraska staffers with his test numbers. He ran a verified 4.43 in the 40 and had a broad jump of 10-4. He was also timed at 4.47 at Wyoming that same week.

Guthrie was part of that crew of June Nebraska offers, and eventual Husker commitments, like Callen Barta who Nebraska's staff was able to form their own thorough evaluations on at Nebraska's camps.

“We had kids come to our camps that ran 4.38, 4.42, broad jumped 10.5 (feet). I don’t care who else offered them," Rhule said at Big Ten media days in a general response to Nebraska's recruiting work. "If I can’t coach a kid that runs that fast and jumps that high, then I can’t coach. That’s also the fun part, finding the guys who are out there.”

While the recruiting process had some annoyances for Guthrie prior to this summer, he stayed patient with it.

He talks the most with Omar Hales – "he's hilarious" – and secondary coach Evan Cooper.

"Coach Cooper really wants me to play DB – one of the three safeties," he said. "So I imagine that's where I'll end up."

Think Isaac Gifford.

Even though the Huskers didn't pull off that opener at Minnesota, Guthrie was plenty impressed by what he saw in the 13-10 loss from the unit he'll be on.

"The defense definitely played lights out, for sure. I like (Tony White) a lot," he said of the Husker defensive coordinator. "Great coach. Once again, he saw what others didn't see in me — like the rest of the staff. So that kind of of built a connection immediately."

He legit will be a top 2 round draft pick someday. He is a freak. His skill set is big time.

I think in hindsight the biggest difference in staffs will be at wideout. Had Scott not totally fucked up two dozen careers we could have a Wandale/Nixon 1-2 this year. That's good for about 120 extra yards a game easily
