September recruiting thread

4-star IOL Grant Brix

Sooners OL Offer Grant Brix

Nebraska recruiting insider Bryan Mongo — Nebraska: “Brix told HuskerOnline the week before Labor Day that he was hesitant to provide a new timeline since he had his feet held to it before, but did still think that he could have a decision in two to three weeks. Two factors can still influence his decision if all things are equal between the schools and programs. …

You now know how the team is doing through the first couple of games, which would favor Oklahoma and Kansas State. And you also have distance from home, which favors Nebraska (Lincoln is just 90 minutes away). In my conversation, Brix acknowledged Nebraska being closer to home and that it was part of his decision. If I am looking at this with Brix’s logic and all things remain equal, the one part that can’t is distance. I predicted that Brix would announce he was committing to Nebraska at the end of June. I don’t have any new information that would drive me to change it now.”

Kansas State recruiting insider Derek Young — Nebraska: “Where I think four-star offensive lineman Grant Brix of Cockeye ends up changes about every day. Kansas State led for much of his recruitment, especially since they were his first offer and sprinted out to a monster lead for his services. Teams like Oklahoma and Nebraska entered the mix and left a mark on him after visits to Norman and Lincoln. The Sooners were the last team to have a tremendous amount of buzz, though all three have held that honor at various times in the process. I’ll still say Nebraska, just because they satisfy a lot of what he’s looking for and have the closest proximity to him in terms of location. That has been a consistent factor for him. However, him picking either of the three schools wouldn’t surprise me at this stage.”

2024 Omaha Westside defensive back Caleb Benning is off to a terrific start to his senior season, as the Warriors are undefeated and the recruit feels like he’s never played better.
The numbers back up Benning, who has three total touchdowns, two interceptions, a handful of tackles and a bunch of early season highlights.
The start is everything Benning wanted after missing most of his junior year following a broken collarbone in September 2022.
“I think I’m backing up the fact I bet on myself,” he said. “I worked very hard this offseason getting my body right and I feel like the work is paying off but there’s a lot more to go.

“I would say I’m a lot more confident and that allows me to play faster knowing I put in the work on my body to be healthy. I don’t have to save anything or slow up. I can fly around and make plays.”
The fast start hasn’t gone unnoticed locally, where Nebraska has redoubled its efforts to add to a strong crop of in-state players by landing Benning. The defensive back said the conversation with Nebraska has always been consistent, but the Huskers have really started to come after the recruit as of late.
“It was already relatively good to start with, but it has picked up as well,” he said. “I do think my performance has played into it.”
It helps that Benning has used his opportunities to talk with the coaches well. The defensive back has built a good rapport with defensive backs coach Evan Cooper especially.
“My relationship with him is really good,” Ever since I was down there in the spring and we got on the same page when I spent 2.5 hours with him. We talked life, football and out visions are aligned. He’s texting me a couple times a week just to check in. Before my games and his games. I’ve been very impressed with what Nebraska is doing with the defensive backs. Him and Tony White so far.
“I see a fit for sure. Like Omar Brown, I’ve been taking notice of him, he’s playing well. They have him flying down and making plays, while being in coverage too. The system kind of benefits the DBs.”
And what does that mean for a timeline that had always been said to be following the football season?
“A decision could be expected pretty soon,” Benning said.
Benning, who would still like to hear from other programs, said Kansas State remains in contact as well. The defender will make an unofficial visit to Nebraska with several teammates this weekend.
Among those the defender is hoping to catch on the sidelines is Nebraska quarterback commit Daniel Kaelin, who Benning intercepted in last week’s showdown between Westside and Bellevue West.
The interception gives Benning takeaways against each of Nebraska’s two Elite 11 participants, as the defender also twice picked off now Oklahoma State quarterback Zane Flores last year in the Class A title game when the signal caller was then playing for Gretna.
“I been trying to get Danny on one so it felt good to get him,” Benning said. “I haven’t let him have it, but next time I see him, maybe this weekend, I’ll for sure let him have it.”
