Hypothetically if you had your pick of either HC, same money, same asst pool etc, who are you picking and why?

Some things to consider:
  • Rhule better recruiter in TX
  • #2ndChoice strong recruiter in upper Midwest
  • Rhule better program builder (arguably)
  • #2ndChoice higher ceiling/went to CFP (some would say he has higher ceiling)
  • Rhule has had massive $$$ contract
  • #2ndChoice has not had mega $$$ deal yet
  • Rhule would bolt for dream job (PSU)
  • #2ndChoice would bolt for dream job (OSU)

#2ndChoice due to him being currently in the game and knowing big ten football and how to win here. Easier transition IMO.
I always assumed so too.

The thing that gets me excited about Rhule is the TX HS connections though. That is a clear selling point for Rhule. When Paul Myerberg said that 'if you polled 300 TX HS coaches, their most popular CFB coach would be Matt Rhule.' That's a huge huge selling point for Rhule. Pair Matt Rhule's TX recruiting with Mickey's LA recruiting and you have a very strong 1-2 punch there.

#2ndChoice I agree has the higher upside, but his recruiting connections are mostly Ohio right? You wonder who he'd be able to pull out of there to come to Nebraska.

Just food for thought. I voted #2ndChoice, but that TX recruiting angle for Rhule is a serious strong point for him.

Rhule’s an east coast guy, he might have some connections remaining from his Baylor days but he hired the staff that had the TX connections and that’s how they recruited so well there.

I really wish the BIG would have took OU and Texas. That would have helped us in recruiting down there.

Everybody knows by now I'm all N on Rhule. Seems like such a great fit for our fanbase and program. Matt has a much wider deeper coaching tree so is tied to higher level Asst Coaches. He's coached in Power 5 (Penn St, UCLA & Baylor) plus NFL (NY Giants & Carolina Panthers). Has great recruiting ties to Texas and the North East. He has already revived 2 programs that were basically left for dead. Plus he seems to eat, sleep and drink football. If you've heard him speak he just seems to truly love the sport and coaching it. He even mentioned that on on the NFL Networks tv show Good Morning Football today. He is also a guest on the show tomorrow. One of the best guests they have had IMHO. He's very good in front of the camera. Comes across very humble plus a gifted speaker

It's a matter of preference between 2 great hires, but I've developed a man crush on Rhule too.

Any sane, objective person would pick Rhule in our situation. Unfathomable that so many people went Fick.

I'm great with Fickel too, just have him a notch or 2 down my Coaching Christmas List. I've got Rhule at the top of my List, even over Urban as I feel his morals and demeanor fit the Nebraska fans and culture better. I also feel Turd will be able to work much

If anyone wants some copium - CSA has already flipped #2ndChoice once.

Reportedly he was ready to head out west and take the USC job and they were willing to wait until the playoff game was over, but then Lincoln Riley entered the picture. We're using the same contacts and if all the reporting on Turd's infatuation with #2ndChoice is true that might be a reason why he hired CSA.

I find it really timely that as soon as #2ndChoice's name gets tossed around by legit media guys all these other names come rapid fire. Who knows

I agree 100% I don’t think we go wrong either way.

Can't go wrong with either in my opinion. Both would be A+ hires with those realistically available this year.

I went with Rhule, mostly because of his experience in building up a program. I also like the story of how he recruited and developed at Temple with a goal of beating Penn St while he was there and accomplishing it. I'm also biased for doing more deep digging on him over #2ndChoice.

I've been really impressed with what #2ndChoice has done though, and for Cincinnati having a reputation of having assistants bigger programs can poach and see benefits from. He's 9-2 in a year where most of his staff left the previous year and still going strong. And he has a consistent sample size of maintaining winning records while at Cincinnati in spite of shuffling staffs.

Neither hire would have me going "But what if we got the other guy?"

I voted Rhule, and lean ever so slightly in his favor. Tough decision.

In many ways I think #2ndChoice would create more national adoration, but we need a coach that's turned around programs.

I also like that #2ndChoice has some B1G experience. Tough choice, but Rhule is 1A and #2ndChoice is 1B.
