John Butler is about as charismatic as a can of chickpeas. He’s been working exclusively with grown men the last 10 years and not high school/college kids. His ability to recruit is dubious at best.
Oh i totally agree on that bit, its a valid concern, we need some better recruiters on defense. The only thing i like about this is Phil Snow coming along. Hes the best defensive coach Rhule has had, maybe even better than White.

Given that they can outsource recruiting to dudes like Mozee nowadays, I don't really see that as a big deal
I think that’s true, but it also helps if guys want to play for you. When he was hired, it seemed like you were expecting to hear a lot of the guys in the DB room talking about how great he was.

Maybe it just didn’t get reported, but if he hadn’t come in with the expectations of a guy who wanted to be a DC and hadn’t been hired by anyone, I’m not sure you would’ve gotten that he was the next man up in our staff just from following the team last year.

It’s an enormous deal for player retention, which is becoming as important as recruiting. Players interact most with their position coaches, so it is crucial that they connect with them
I dont know that I accept the idea that a guy who has been a football coach at a high level for the better part of two decades can't connect with football players.

For his career and life stage, I expect that he's not going to be the best dude to be blowing up HSers phones, but he doesn't need to be given that current recruiting environment

He doesn’t need to recruit
Every single coach on our staff needs to recruit. We aren’t a top tier program so that is how we bridge the gap. Remember that Butler also needs to retain players. Whether you’re recruiting or coaching someone, it’s all about developing strong relationships so that they buy into whatever it is you are asking them to do.

We can only send ten guys on the road and we'll have 20+ coaches on the staff. Coordinators almost never spend much time recruiting in the B1G or SEC. You can have a good relationship with your players without being a good recruiting salesman.

Forgive me for not having a great deal of confidence in dragging a 69 year old coach out of retirement to help with 18-21 year olds amidst the free agency portal era in a win-now or else year with a new DC who has 1 year experience back in 2013.
