I visited here many times before moving here. My wife, who was originally from here, warned me when I decided to move us here - in her words "are you sure you know what you are doing moving us to Butte Montana?". I said, look, I grew up on a hog farm in NE Nebraska, I am sure I can handle Butte, MT. She said I didn't know what she really meant - and she was right. Even having visited here many times before moving, I didn't grasp what this place actually is. It didn't take me too long (maybe 6 months, a year at most) to realize what she meant.
In any case, I won't be here forever. I would have moved long ago, but again, kids being here still keeps me here. There is not much, in all honesty, that is good to say about Butte Montana. The society is absolute shit overall (again, there are good people everywhere in spite of shit societies they might live in). The town is corrupt as hell overall and the few money familes (mostly from the old mining days) have kept any progress out of the town (to the money families benefit), which has kept the economy shitty. The weather/climate is one of the worst in the lower 48. I am talking honest 8+ months of actual, true, winter weather. November through even April can be cold as balls. We get about a month, month and a half of "summer" here. It has snowed here several times on the 4th of July since I have lived here. Think about that for a bit - snow on the fucking 4th of July.
Yes, Butte is in the Rocky mountains, but holy hell, there are no natural water sources, rivers or lakes here - meaning you have to drive 45 minutes minimum to get to nicer places with water sources. It is a high, dry, arid basin that still happens to get tons of snow in spite of being dry and arid otherwise. And the mining has made the entire area and absolute toxic waste dump. And much of that toxicity has been covered up or downplayed for going on a century now by money players/people/Gov. Cancer rates are extremely high here.
I LOL when people talk about "out of staters" ruining Montana. For fuck sake, have you looked at your town?!? You swim in your own cesspool that you made. It's not being "ruined" by the few out of staters that are dumb enough to move here. If a place isn't progressing, it is regressing and dying. Most out of staters moving here anyway are doing so to get away from the coastal societies, so really they kind of fit in more than is admitted.
I could go on. I have no/zero reason to have this opinion of Butte besides the fact that what I described is what it is. I love Montana and the mountains, but moving to Butte specifically was the biggest mistake of my life.
