Official Fall Practice Thread

Is it true Scotty only allows country music at practice and it bugs a majority of our players? @kenyanfeline

apparently scott makes the team wear red all the time and that upsets some of them because the republican party and conservative states are associated with red

They had a wide variety when I was at a spring practice. I'm guessing it's the same.
Good to know. I just got that tidbit from the LJS article posted on TOS…

Amie Just/Luke Mullin

“MUSIC: As country music blared, transfer receiver Marcus Washington pleaded with the practice playlist custodian to play more hip-hop, specifically from Louisiana rapper NBA YoungBoy, who released his fourth studio album “The Last Slimeto” on Aug. 5.

Washington’s plea went unheard, as the practice playlist for the portion of practice open to the media contained "Burning Man" from Dierks Bentley, "American Ride" from Toby Keith, "Flatliner" from Cole Swindell and Bentley, "Aw Naw" from Chris Young, "Eight Second Ride" from Jake Owen, "Beer Never Broke My Heart" by Luke Combs and "This is How We Roll" from Florida Georgia Line.”

Nebraska head coach Scott Frost met with the media Saturday morning following his team's 14th practice of fall camp.

Frost gave an injury update on true freshman receiver Decoldest Crawford and offensive lineman Turner Corcoran. You can read that here.

Here are the quick hits from Frost's time in front of the media:

>> Frost said he's seen "steady improvement" on the quarterback front between the top two of Texas transfer Casey Thompson and Florida State transfer Chubba Purdy. He feels good right now about going into a game and operate in a way that would win it "with more than one guy."

"I might have more to say after the scrimmage tomorrow," Frost said of the quarterback race.

>> The team will have a scrimmage on Sunday before turning the attention to Northwestern prep.

"A lot of decisions will be made probably after tomorrow," Frost said. "We'll have a pretty good idea of the depth chart, not sure when we'll release it."

>> Frost continues to be impressed with the offensive line. The unit is working harder than he's ever seen, and the stats say so.

"We put a lot of science into this, with the NAPL (Nebraska Athletic Performance Laboratory) lab and with Zach (Duval)," Frost said. "The guys wear monitors that track overall output and a hundred other statistics. They're more than doubling, in a lot of cases, the amount of effort they put out the last couple years in practice."

That has to do about the players' effort and how O-line coach Donovan Raiola is working them.

>> Frost said there's been more "movement and coming off the ball" from the O-line, as he's said repeatedly this offseason. Frost added he even gets frustrated during team sessions because the linemen are "dog tired" from their individual drills they do.

Frost said Raiola and first-year graduate assistant Aaron Coeling have been doing a good job with those workouts.

"We'll probably have to curtail that as we get into season a little bit," Frost said of the strenuous workouts. "But the work that they've gotten done is extraordinary in camp."

Frost also touched on Raiola and how his way of teaching is coming along.

"When I went out interviewing people, I wanted to find somebody who felt the same way I did about the mentality and technique," Frost said, "and Donnie knows it better than I do, but I love what he taught and it's coming to fruition now."

>> Frost didn't want to talk about why it look so long to make a change with former O-line coach Greg Austin.

“I don’t wanna talk about that today," Frost said. "I have too much respect for people that were here before that are great coaches. This just fits what I believe in better.”

>> Frost said running back Gabe Ervin Jr. is "a better player than he was before he got hurt." Ervin sat out Saturday's practice as a normal "rest day" to help take care of his knee.

"Our running back room has really made a giant leap and it's going to be tough to separate yourself from that group with the guys we have in that room," Frost said.

>> Texas transfer receiver Marcus Washington has been "better than I expected" according to Frost. Washington has been "ahead of the curve" in terms of picking up the offense. Frost said that's easier to do with experienced players, like Washington.

"He's been a great teammate, he's worked hard, he's shown up on special teams, so that says a lot about his character," Frost said.

>> Frost sounded happy with where the receivers were at overall as a group.

"I think we’re deeper there than we’ve ever been with guys that are capable of going on the field," Frost said, "and I think we’re gonna be able to keep our best on the field and rotate and not feel like there’s not much of a drop-off.”

>> Interior defensive lineman Devin Drew, a transfer from Texas Tech, has impressed Frost in the short amount of time he's been in Lincoln.

"He does show up. He's a twitchy athlete for being an inside guy," Frost said. "I think he's going to add to what we have there and definitely be in the mix. He's got a lot to work on to make sure he knows what he's doing."

>> Frost touched on the kicking specialists projected to start: punter Brian Buschini and field goal kicker Timmy Bleekrode.

"I feel great about kicker and punter right now, which puts a smile on my face to say," Frost said. "I think we’ve got several who can do it and have been doing really well in camp. It’s different when the lights are on in the soccer stadium, but what I’ve seen from them we’re gonna be vastly improved."

>> Frost was asked about the triple-option plays that were being run inside Memorial Stadium last Wednesday.

“We did a lot of it last year. We did a lot of it against Northwestern, and it’s been really good to us. We’ll see,” Frost said with a smile.

>> In terms of how many players will be able to dress for the game against Northwestern, Frost said it's a normal Big Ten road game, which means 74 players will suit up. Northwestern will be the home team in Dublin.

“It’s a conference game, so we’re subject to the conference number when we’re suiting players up," he said. "We’re gonna take everybody that was in camp — so 110 — to Ireland, but some won’t be able to dress.”

Ohhh man what a twist! Picture this…

NW knows Nebraska kicked their ass last year and used Triple option a lot. *someone spots them practicing it….writes about it and asks Scott in a presser….Scott acknowledges they’ve been “practicing” it….openly comments that he used it to kick NW teeth in last year and then gives a quirky smile…..

*NW spends the next two weeks figuring out how to stop it. We line up in that set and then plow them with a whole other set of plays out of a set that looks like that.

Frost is Genius!!

Frost comments:

***Frost said on Saturday that freshman wide receiver Decoldest Crawford will be out for an “extended amount of time with a knee injury”. The Louisiana native was injured in Nebraska’s last scrimmage on Saturday, the coach said.

Crawford is the only major injury of Nebraska’s fall camp so far, Frost said.

***Frost said the Huskers haven’t had a camp let down this year like he’s seen in the past. He said they show up to work every day and are hungry for success.

***Nebraska has a scrimmage on Sunday and Frost will have a good idea of its depth chart afterward, he said. However, he doesn’t know when he will release it. After the scrimmage, the Huskers will turn their focus to preparing for Northwestern in Ireland on Aug. 27.

***Frost said Nebraska’s quarterbacks are steadily improving. He feels good that they could go into a game and win with more than one guy. He’ll know more after Sunday’s scrimmage.

***As for the offensive line, Frost said they are working harder than he has ever seen them work. The monitors Nebraska uses to track the athletes’ overall output and many other statistics prove that the linemen are “more than doubling, in a lot of cases, the amount of effort they put out in the last couple of years,” he said.

Frost said the linemen have increased their movement and how much they come off the ball. He said sometimes he gets frustrated when the team gets together as a whole because the linemen are dog-tired by the time they get to team drills. Frost said they’ll adjust that once the season begins.

“But the work that they’ve gotten done is extraordinary in camp,” he said.

***Frost said running back Gabe Ervin is a better player now than he was before his knee injury. He said Ervin sat out on Saturday to rest because his knee was “flaring up a little.”

Ervin looks bigger, faster and is hitting holes really hard, the coach said.

***The running back room has made a “giant leap”. Frost said it’s going to be hard for the players to separate themselves and rise to the top of the pack.

Frost listed Rahmir Johnson and Jaquez Yant as improved running backs. Anthony Grant, Ajay Allen and Emmett Johnson are three “really good players” Nebraska added this off-season as well.

“I think the competition has spurred them to play harder and coach (Bryan) Applewhite demands a lot out of those guys,” Frost said. “He coaches them hard and he’s getting a lot out of them.”

***Wide receiver Marcus Washington arrived this summer after transferring from Texas. Frost said he has done a great job, has done better than he expected, is a great teammate and works hard. Washington has shown up on special teams which Frost said says a lot about this character.

Frost said he is ahead of the curve with learning Nebraska’s program because he has played a lot of football.

***Defensive lineman Devin Drew got to Lincoln on Tuesday after graduating with his undergraduate degree from Texas Tech a few days before. Drew’s first practice with Nebraska was on Wednesday which Frost said was the only practice he has seen so far of Drew’s.

Frost said he is a twitchy athlete for being an inside guy and that he will definitely be in the mix but has a lot to work on.

***Frost said he feels good about kicker and punter but it’s different when the lights are on in the stadium but from what he’s seen, Nebraska is going to be”vastly improved.” He said having Bill Busch as the full-time special teams coordinator is making a difference and has helped get everyone on the same page.

***Nebraska practiced mostly on turf for the first two weeks but started practicing on grass on Friday and Saturday with the field in Ireland being grass. The team will be on grass mostly until they leave for Ireland.

Frost said he assumes the field will be really good in Ireland but the Huskers need to get used to cuts on grass.

***Frost said Nebraska is better in the running back room because of the coach and the running backs themselves.

“When you’ve got good running backs, they make the O-lines look good,” he said. “We’re throwing the ball downfield maybe a little more and that backs people up and makes things look better.”

***Frost said offensive lineman Turner Corcoran, who was out during the spring, missed a few days during fall camp but practiced the last two days.

***At wide receiver, Frost listed Alante Brown, Oliver Martin and Ty Hahn as players that are doing good things. He said Wyatt Liewer looks more explosive than he’s ever seen him and Brody Belt is very versatile. He said Crawford was doing well before his injury. Omar Manning is another player Frost said is doing “wonderful things.”

He stressed that he didn’t want to leave names out but that Nebraska is deeper than they’ve ever been with very capable players.

***Frost said the Huskers are taking 110 players to Ireland but some won’t be able to dress for the game.

His answer to the receiver question (done with a straight face) was gold!
