Follow along here for live updates from Nebraska's Week 0 press conference this afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
Head coach Scott Frost and 5-6 Husker players are scheduled to meet with reporters around 3 p.m. CT.
Scott Frost is up
***Frost said this trip was a long time coming, and the players were excited to finally get going in Ireland and play the game.
***Frost praised NU's operations teams for all of the work they've done to set the trip up, as well as equipment manager Jay Terry, the medical staff, and the video staff. He said all of this work was to make sure the players could focus on "just football."
***Frost said he "exaggerated the puking a little bit" when talking about how hard the o-line worked this offseason. He said NU was extremely aware and cautious about the well-being of their players and keeping them healthy and safe.
***Frost said the four captains - Garrett Nelson, Caleb Tannor, Nick Henrich, and Travis Vokolek - were selected by a vote from the players.
***Frost said the first 24 hours in Ireland have had "more conversations than I can remember" about the best way to handle it with the team. He said they'd sought out a lot of advice, including blacking out the overnight flight to help guys sleep and then have an easier acclimation day when they arrive.
He said the goal is by Wednesday morning, they're all rested and ready to go.
***Frost said, "you just never know what's going to happen" with the logistics of a trip like this, but so far, he thinks they've checked about every box possible to make sure they're as prepared as possible.
***Frost said Casey Thompson had the fewest turnovers and mental mistakes of the QBs during the offseason, especially fall camp. Thompson's age and experience are going to help him handle the pressure of taking the reigns of Nebraska's offense, Frost said.
***Frost said NU had a lot of talented quarterbacks, but the biggest separator was Thompson's experience.
***At running back, Frost said Bryan Applewhite could maybe give a better answer, but "this is the most talented and deepest group that we've had" at RB.
***Frost said Mark Whipple will call the game from the sideline, which will allow him to focus more on defense and special teams as well as offense.
***Frost said having three of the four captains be defensive players was a result of the strong culture on that side of the ball and the type of kids they've recruited. He said there were several other offensive players who got votes, but those were the guys who got the most.
***Frost said he didn't put much stock into what happened vs. Northwestern last year. He said both teams would be hungry after a disappointing 2021.
***Frost said he "couldn't be happier" with how all of the new pieces had meshed this offseason, but added that NU hadn't faced any adversity yet. "That's going to be the first real test."
***Frost said the offensive line leadership was headed by center Trent Hixson but also mentioned Broc Bando, Turner Corcoran, Teddy Prochazka, and Henry Lutovsky.
***Frost said they hadn't handed out Blackshirts yet, but that was only because they "had to pack jerseys" to send to Ireland and didn't "want them all sweaty." He said they would be officially handed out on their first day in Ireland.
***Frost said Nebraska's offensive identity hadn't changed much from last year except that guys were a lot more confident. "Our offense needed a little injection of that."
He pointed out Trey Plamer and Marcus Washington as guys that were almost "confident to a fault." He said Thompson was also "right in the thick of that."
***Frost said he talked with the team about how NU was "a little bit too tight" last year at Illinois. "We're going to go out there and let it rip" in Dublin. "I don't want the guys to worry about anything."
***Frost said Caleb Tannor was "on a lot of lists" for being late and not doing what he was supposed to do early in his career, and "I don't know if I've seen as much growth from a player than him." He said Tannor was an example of what he loves the most about coaching with seeing guys grow as people and not just players.
That's all for Frost.
Casey Thompson is up
***Thompson said, "I've kind of known for a little bit" that he would be the starter based on how reps had been divided in practices. He said he was thankful and appreciative for the opportunity.
***Thompson said his experience with 12 appearances and 10 starts would really help him this season. He said, "the game has really slowed down for me," and his decision-making and poise in the pocket had noticeably improved.
Thompson said he only turned it over less than 10 times during "hundreds of reps" in the offseason, and a couple of those were off of tipped passes.
***Thompson said Nebraska had a lot more depth at every position than he had at Texas. he said Trey Palmer fastest receiver he'd thrown to and said the WRs as a whole had been really good all offseason.
***Thompson said Palmer and Marcus Washington both had great football IQs, which showed in how well they ran their routes and found ways to get open.
***Thompson said NU's staff hadn't announced who the starting receivers would be yet.
***Thompson said that defensive lineman Adetomiwa Adebawore was the player who had stood out the most about Northwestern's defense.
***Thompson said he hadn't gotten nervous at all leading up to his first NU start. He said the calmest he ever was before a game was last year against Oklahoma. He said he tries to get into a "meditative state" going into games, which he added was "hard to explain" further.
***Thompson said, "the chip on my shoulder now is bigger than it ever was," and he couldn't wait to show his ability in a game at Nebraska. He said he'd tried to make sure all of his teammates strive for perfection in everything they do.
That's all for Thompson.
Quinton Newsome is up
***Newsome said the defensive backs had a great fall camp, especially with all of the new players meshing with the returners. He said a lot of guys stepped up, and he was excited to see them play in a game.
***Newsome said the whole team believed in the four captains "100%" as leaders.
***Newsome said he and Tommi Hill had developed a great relationship. "He's like a little brother to me."
***Newsome said Northwestern's offense was "very good at what they do" and were "very smart" with how they attacked defenses.
***Newsome said sleep had been a big emphasis leading up to the trip. He said a lot of guys weren't used to a trip like this, so they had to make sure they stayed as rested as possible.
***Newsome said Tannor had become "a great role model" and "a pro" with how he handled himself on and off the field.
That's all for Newsome.
Nick Henrich is up
***Henrich said being named a captain "was a pretty surreal feeling. I was pretty speechless... It's something I'll cherish the rest of my life."
***Henrich said having three defensive captains was representative of the culture they've created over the last five years.
***Henrich said the captains needed to "keep doing what you're doing" as the team goes over to Ireland. "We've just got to keep holding everyone accountable like we've been doing."
***Henrich said Northwestern's offense had big, physical running backs and would bring a "downhill running game" from the start.
***Henrich said the team learned a lot of lessons about last year's Week 0 loss at Illinois, and they were going to apply what they learned against Northwestern.
***Henrich agreed that Tannor had grown as much as any person he'd seen over the past four years. He said Tannor grew up a lot and now was "a dog, man."
That's all for Henrich.
Travis Vokolek is up
***Vokolek said being named a captain "means everything" to him. He said Austin Allen, a captain last year, made sure he knew how big of an honor it was, and he's embraced all that comes with the role.
***Vokolek said it was especially an honor that he was the only offensive player selected as a captain. But he added that there were a lot of guys on offense who had stepped up as leaders over the offseason.
***Vokolek said Allen told him to be vocal and don't be afraid to "confront people" when guys weren't doing what they were supposed to do.
***Vokolek said the tight ends would be put in spots to make plays in Whipple's offense.
***Vokolek said Casey Thompson was "a great dude" who had "grown a lot" since he first arrived in the winter. Vokolek said Thompson was "one of the hardest workers I know" and was always watching film and perfecting his craft.
***Vokolek said the opener was "huge" with a lot of unique variables, but NU was a confident team and everyone knew how important this week was.
That's all for Vokolek.
Garrett Nelson is up
***Nelson said when he first got to Nebraska, the EDGE group was "probably one of the weakest" units on the team. For Frost to call it maybe the strongest unit this season was a testament to how much they'd improved and the work they've put in.
**Nelson said it was a huge honor to be named captain, especially since he got to do it with Henrich. He said there may have been "a tear or two" shed when they found out.
***On Tannor, Nelson said he was "kind of a hot mess" and "kind of a problem guy" early in his career. Nelson said Tannor was now focused on being the best player, teammate, and leader he could be. "He's completely turned a new leaf."
***Nelson said d-line coach Mike Dawson had a lot to do with Tannor's growth.
***Nelson said Northwestern's offensive line, led by left tackle Peter Skoronski, was why you played in the Big Ten. "Great player. Really excited to go against him."
***Nelson said Ochaun Mathis had "added another element to our defense." Mathis picked up the defense quickly after a bit of a learning curve and now playing at a very high level.
***Nelson said the thing he was looking forward to most in Dublin was "winning the game."
***On the QBs, Nelson said, "Those guys can sling it, man. They're all ballers."
***Nelson said Jimari Butler and Blaise Gunnerson had developed a lot, and he'd made it a point to lead those guys as much as possible to help them. He said he didn't get that type of veteran leadership when he was a younger player, just stuff like how to watch film, learn the defense, and "just be a good football player."
***Nelson said Tannor was "probably one of the fastest, if not the fastest guys on the team."
***Nelson said it was a fine line in balancing the importance of winning in Ireland while also not putting too much pressure on guys. "When you focus too hard on things not to hit, you end up hitting them."
That's all for Nelson.
