Official Fall Practice Thread

Fall camp has concluded for Nebraska and the team held its second scrimmage on Sunday. It was an important one since it was a great chance for players to impress before the coaches try to solidify a depth chart. Here’s what I am hearing about what happened at the scrimmage after talking with people in and around the program.

>> Casey Thompson had another strong scrimmage on Sunday. He was pretty consistent just like he has been all camp. Chubba Purdy got some looks with the first-team offense on Sunday but it was clear again that Thompson is still leading this race.

>> I’m told once again that the offensive line was much better when run blocking than pass blocking. That’s been a theme all camp which has allowed some running backs to shine. I’m told the top three running backs—Anthony Grant, Gabe Ervin Jr and Rahmir Johnson—have performed well when they have holes to run through.

>> One of the offensive linemen that has had a strong camp is Kevin Williams Jr. He’s been working a lot at right tackle but right now Bryce Benhart is still the starter. We’ll see if Benhart can hold the spot once the season gets going.

>> The sense right now is that the starting secondary will be Quinton Newsome, Tommi Hill, Myles Farmer and Marques Buford Jr.

Hill has big-time potential and could be a breakout player for the Huskers this season. Farmer had a pretty good scrimmage according to sources I’ve talked to.

>> It was talked about on the projected defensive depth chart story Zack did but once again Garrett Nelson and Caleb Tannor are currently the starting EDGE players. Ochaun Mathis will obviously play a lot and have a huge role on the defense. Mathis was disruptive again during the scrimmage and I’m told he made plays against the first and second-team offensive line.

>> Colton Feist finished camp strong with a good scrimmage. He plays with a high motor and good fundamentals. Feist will certainly be in the rotation if not starting next to Ty Robinson in the right defensive situation.

>> It seems like Scott Frost’s happiness with the kicking game is well-placed. The combination of Bill Busch, Timmy Bleekrode and Brian Buschini should improve the Huskers special teams this season.

If the stuff about special teams is actually true, that’s gotta be worth two wins on its own

The Kicker is money in practice. But we haven't seen him kick in a 60,000 seat stadium while 18,000 Americans fight off jet lag.

The punter has some bizarre swag. Dude will go viral this year... hopefully not like Lightbourn.

I'm not even that concerned if he's a 60% or 80% or 90% FG kicker.... just him being competent on FGs and XPs will be a huge boost to the team and I'll explain why. In 2021 the fact that we had SUCH a poor FG kicker had a massive effect mentally on the offense. The entire team actually. When the team is in close games vs Michigan, MSU, Cockeye, Minnesota, etc the fact that you can't count on your FG team weighs on your mind in EVERY drive you make. It adds to the pressure the QB feels when a good drive starts to sputter. Hell, it was even worse than that in the Oklahoma game as we couldn't even get an EXTRA POINT off there without giving up 2 pts for the opposition. I've never seen a kicking unit mindfuck a team like ours did in 2021.

This is why I found it so interesting that Whipple mentioned out of nowhere "we don't need to force it, we've got a good FG kicker." I've been following CFB for 40 yrs, I don't think I've ever heard an OC say that. Seriously. Whipple must have seen how fucked up mentally our STs made this team last year.

So I don't even care if Bleekrode is overrated or doesn't live up to the billing. At very least he won't wrench our offense's psyche like the kickers did last year.

Firm believer that our best kickers and punters are molded by W.N. influences. Maher, Foltz, Koch, and Henery (not from W.N. but likely has strong W.N. family ties). One thing I sure as fuck would never do is bring in a kicker or punter from the west coast like Lightborn. Dudes grow up thinking a 30k stadium is the big leagues out there.
