Official 2023 Nebraska Baseball Thread

He’s a man without a position without quite the level of power you’d like to see for someone who may end up as a DH. But maybe he’ll surprise everyone and keep gaining strength and turn into a right handed Kyle Schwarber.

That’s kind of where I fall as well. The thing that makes it a tad interesting is that I’m curious if he’s done developing physically. He’s always looked like a little kid to me.

He doesn’t have a position like you said, he isn’t a guy who’s gonna hit 30 bombs, etc.

I like Max the husker. Max the pro prospect….? Different story.

The answer is obvious...Slammin' Sammy Sosa.

I mean Childress 🤷🏼‍♂️

I'm frankly over the Bolt experiment. Next year he needs to be on the hot seat.

Also he let a fucking SEC infield leave the state.

Childress isn’t the answer either. He had his chance at A&M where he had elite talent and couldn’t get over the hump and had a terrible season the year he was fired. Great pitching coach but not a great head coach. If he became the pitching coach, great but I’m not so sure making him the head coach will change things over night.

If Nebraska makes a change they need to go out and find either a great coach outside the P5 looking for a change or go for a young up coming assistant coach. I know we all hate cockeyes but I think Heller is a fantastic coach. He came from Indianus State who happens to also be having a great season as well.

With all that being said idk enough of what’s going behind the scenes in the Husker locker room. Something seems amiss with the up and down play. Even with player leadership concerns a great coach can focus his players. So far that hasn’t happened.

If I’m Turd you talk to Bolt and see if Bolt needs anything else and maybe talk about improved assistants for next season and lay out some bench marks because unfortunately, Bolts tenure so far reminds me a lot of Erstads, nothing spectacular.

Side note: I’m not too sure most of the baseball players leaving Nebraska would have gone to Nebraska anyways. Most kids now days want to play in the South if given the opportunity.

Community note* the writer did not specify that you need to combine both the 2023 and 2024 class to create an all SEC infield from Nebraska. 2023 class Kozeal to Vandy, Eaton to Vols, Small to Kentucky. 2024 Fountain to LSU and Lewis to Arkansas.
God damn that’s a lot of kids leaving the state! What’s up with the recruiting?

No inside info but I know it’s a combo of kids just wanting to leave the state and the allure of SEC baseball from articles written up on those aforementioned players.

Shitting the bed in year 2 thwarted any recruiting momentum we might’ve had coming off a great year 1. In reality, that awful year 2 probably set Bolt back 2-3 years.

We lose Anderson and Matthews but

Olson, Kaminska, and Walsh could all be coming back, so we could have a solid group of starting pitchers. I wonder who our closer will be next year.

We will have Carey at 3b or SS, and Columbus back at 1b, and Caron back at catcher.

We will have Swanson, Anglim, Evans and Brumbaugh back in the outfield.

So there’s a lot of experience back.

We are also bringing in quite a few JUCOs as well.

Evan Bland wrote an article prior to this season and he talked about the "rule of 25" which is generally true of good teams. You add up the combined seasons of regulars in a lineup (1 for freshman, 2 for sophomore, etc) and the total should be at least 25. In 2021 we were at 30, 2022 we were at 25, and in 2023 we were somewhere between 28 and 34.

For 2024 we will have quite a bit coming back. If you add up our returning starters and IF/OF then we are sitting at 32ish, and that's not including whoever plays 2B and 3B (or SS, depending on where Carey is going to play). Mozley did start at 2B for us toward the end of the season this year, and he will be a senior next year. And we've got a bunch of juco infielders coming in as well who put up good numbers in juco.

I dunno if your're supposed to count relief pitchers in this calculation, but we've got a nice core of relief pitchers coming back as well.

So if nothing else, we seem to be gradually building a more experienced roster.
