The problem is a borderline player that would have walked on to Nebraska 20-30 years ago will go to places like NDSU or Wyoming now because of college prices and Nebraska isn’t what it was.
This - add in the facts that (1) there is way more recruiting info out there today versus 30 years ago so it’s way harder for a prospect to fly under the radar, (2) many NEB fans include guys like Jared Tomich as walk ons because they didn’t start on scholarship when they absolutely would have except they didn’t qualify so it gets romanticized even in the glory years of it and (3) the fact that weight training, performance centers, supplements, etc. are all done now at the HS level so there are fewer late bloomers than 30 years ago, and the juice becomes less and less worth the squeeze.
How many walk ons in the past 10 years have turned into players you were legit happy were starting vs. filling holes, often suboptimally, from bad recruiting?
