C’mon- walk on progrum would be great if you took 3-5 a year….not 20.
It’s a numbers game… The idea is that you take 20 a year and hope that one or two develop into B1G players and process the rest who don’t. It’s tough to evaluate walk ons so you just take a bunch and hope you get lucky with one or two. Problem is when instead of using the 1-2 that could possibly contribute turns into playing a bunch of walk ons who aren’t quite B1G caliber because of bad recruiting. So I wouldn’t really say the problem is with the walk on program it’s self but how it is used to patch recruiting misses.

It’s a numbers game because they are poor evaluators.

the 1-2 guys the may pull from it isn’t worth the investment right now. Maybe once Frost had his system/processes/staff in place he should think about it. Bottom line these coaches are having a hard enough time managing the scholarship players.

I think the concept is good. But when you need elite athletes to accomplish what you're trying to accomplish, walk ons don't really provide that. But I am a sucker for a good story of hard work and commitment.
The problem is a borderline player that would have walked on to Nebraska 20-30 years ago will go to places like NDSU or Wyoming now because of college prices and Nebraska isn’t what it was.

As long as people are talking pipe dream coaching hires…..someone on RRS started a thread about Chris Peterson. Maybe 2 years off to recharge the batteries is just what a guy like him needed before complete his magnum opus: resurrecting the Big Red.
How old is he?

This - add in the facts that (1) there is way more recruiting info out there today versus 30 years ago so it’s way harder for a prospect to fly under the radar, (2) many NEB fans include guys like Jared Tomich as walk ons because they didn’t start on scholarship when they absolutely would have except they didn’t qualify so it gets romanticized even in the glory years of it and (3) the fact that weight training, performance centers, supplements, etc. are all done now at the HS level so there are fewer late bloomers than 30 years ago, and the juice becomes less and less worth the squeeze.

How many walk ons in the past 10 years have turned into players you were legit happy were starting vs. filling holes, often suboptimally, from bad recruiting?

realistic options Nebraska should go after in my opinion:

1. Campbell
2. Gundy
3. Petersen
4. #2ndChoice
5. Patterson
6. Malzahn
7. Chadwell
8. Napier
9. Klieman
10. Monken

Can't believe T.O. passed over Chris Peterson to hire Bo Pelini. Peterson would be a home run hire if he still wants to coach. Fun offense, well coached teams and he wins games. Remember all those big schools that Boise St would take down with a bunch of transfers and low ranked recruits? Would feel good to out coach a team for a change

You raise a great question....When was the last time NU actually outcoached the other team to win the game? Solich - Stuntz to Crouch?

I’m now 100% committed to the fantasy of Chris Petersen coming out of retirement to coach Nebraska next season.

If he passed over anyone it was Brian Kelly.
