Not attacking you, just addressing this general sentiment. I have read this line 10,000 times on NU message boards: "Why can't WE ever hire someone Curt Cignetti? Why can't we ever find the next superstar in the lower levels?"

You can't have it both ways. As many others have put it, 98% of our fanbase would have shit all over hiring Cignetti out of JMU three years ago.

  • "Never won in P2"
  • "Doesn't know how to win in B1G"
  • "Level of competition in Sun Belt conference is laughable"
  • "He's too cocky and is going to get humbled in the B1G"
  • "Scott Frost had huge success in lower levels too and we saw how that turned out"
  • "No major HC experience"

You can't have it both ways. You can't whine about Nebraska never getting 'lucky' like Indiana and discovering the "next big thing" and then in the same breath shit all over a hire when we try to identify the next coaching star, etc.

I am in no way saying this guy is the DC version of Cignetti. Just saying, either we're trying to identify top coaching talent or not. Everyone wants the established wiley vet, but we did that with Holgorsen and 75% of this board now thinks he's past his prime. Trying to thread the needle of what our fans actually want is a retard's errand.
Fans are fickle bitches.

You bring your whole staff from your last stop, you're just getting your boys paid

If you hire old coaches the game has passed them by and they can't win in the new era of football

If you hire up and comers they're too green for this level of job

You hire high paid mercenaries, they aren't invested in the long term project and just looking for their next gig

You avoid buddy hires, the staff lacks chemistry and can't work together

You hire a 3 man front guy, not enough beef on the line.

Hire a 4 man front guy Nebraska can't recruit traditional edge rushers

Play 3 safeties, we have tweeners who can't stop the run

Your nose is 6'4" 330 he can't get leverage

Your nose is 5'10" 290 he's too small

Play 3 linebackers and you aren't athletic enough

Fans will always want something different as long as Nebraska isn't winning at a high level

Yeah unless it works!

T
Jacked about that red zone scoring stat. We were miserable there this year.
Turnovers, sacks, red zone, 3rd downs

These are the biggest 4 metrics in defensive football and he improved all of them? I’ll take the gamble at least.

The knock will be “he never had the experience to think this would work”

But it’s not like SDSU has some unbelievable talent advantage comparatively a la UCF in the American…so I don’t hate the dice roll on this guy

Chill your roll. I just responded to the post I screen captured. That is why I didn't like it.

So it seems that the main aspect for consideration for the DC position was that the candidate had to maintain every current D position coach, as is.

No wonder we got an up-and-comer with 1 year experience as a FBS DC.

It’s a risk, hope it works out. If it fails to produce, Rhule’s seat will get plenty hot in ‘26 as a result.

Don’t you think he should meet the staff first?
