Nebrasketball Coaching Hot Board

Fuck it….. stick with Fred…. I feel like he’d get us to the NCAA every 3-4 years. Just have to deal with a clunker season or two in between those years. Seems to be all this program is ever going to be capable of.
I get where you’re coming from but I don’t think Dannen can have the mentality with Fred of “well we normally suck, guess we should be okay with sucking”

I think Nebrasketball fans deserve more. We have a nice arena, good facilities and we have shown that as fans we will continue to show up to PBA. There is no reason other than historical wins and losses that we can’t start winning consistently. The NIL should be there to get us some solid players

knee jerk reaction is to go extreme and cut the program, fire Fred, burn it all down. BUT, Dannen will not cut the program, Fred's seat is hot, We the fans deserve better for the amount of money and support. Should we be satisfied with mediocrity? fuck no, but what is the expectation? make the NCAA every couple of years? I have no answers but I love watching and supporting GOOD basketball and Fred's teams have been less than good for the majority of his tenure.

Dannen was hired here Mar 25. Sprinkle was hired March 25.

Bring in Bucky McMillan. Let’s get some Bucky Bull in PBA
I know many will disagree. But I am of the thought that our best chance at becoming relevant is to go a route where we become the “stepping stone” P5 program.

If you’re a mid major coach making the jump, come through Lincoln for 2-3 years. Slowly we turn the tide on the program by bringing in high energy, high productivity, “next up” guys. If we see one we never want to let go, we use the resources to keep him.

No one wants to make a P5 jump to Lincoln with how difficult it’s proven to be to win here, I truly believe that. It’s either up and comers or we become rehab U, but that’s way more risky.

*EDIT: See Clemson with Brownell

McCollum, McMillian or Drew Valentine would be perfect for that exact situation and I’d be perfectly fine if that’s what we did.

Us: who’s going to be our next basketball coach after we fire Hoiberg?
Simulation: oh no you don’t, your going to go on a run to finish the season sneaking into the Big ten tournament and win a couple of games there and the NIT giving Dannen JUST barely enough reason to keep him around for next season while not actually being a good team.

I honestly don't see him getting rid of Fred no matter what happens tbh. Fred will just argue if Mast was on the team they'd be in better shape. I also don't think Dannen will want to make a change after his first full basketball season as AD.

In all honesty I think Mast alone is worth at least 3 wins in this 5 game losing streak. Team would look a lot different with him at the 4 as a stretch big with Meah/Morgan splitting the 5. Brice Williams has been superman but this team is built around Reink Mast.

Edit*

Mast would also make a huge difference in Essegians game as well as Juwaun Gary like we saw last year. With another shooting threat that will pull bigs out to the paint then Gary gets a lot easier drives to the lane instead of 3 guys waiting for him. Essegian is also probably not chased around so much because teams would have to deploy a zone look on defense. I don't recall Kesei even getting chased around like Essegian does.

Not saying Fred's argument about Mast wouldn't be valid. I completely agree with you. But it's not going to be what the "Fire Fred" portion of the fanbase wants to hear.

No, but it's the truth. Any reasonable fan knows that Mast would be the singular most important player on the team.

Okay, I initially thought this thread was bumped as a joke, but it seems like people are genuinely calling for Fred Hoiberg to be fired. 🤣

Yes, the recent 5-game losing streak has been rough and frustrating to watch, but firing Hoiberg is not the solution. While he may not have earned the same benefit of the doubt as Underwood, Gard, or Collins in the Big Ten, let’s not overlook the fact that before the collapse at Cockeye, Nebraska had a .719 win percentage since February 2023—second in the Big Ten behind Purdue. Fred is a good coach, and I believe he can find a way to turn this around.

The "fire them immediately" mindset is exhausting. Sure, this losing streak is tough to swallow, but let’s not forget that Nebraska made the NCAA Tournament just last year. Considering the program’s history—three tournament appearances in the last 27 years—accomplishing that alone should buy Hoiberg a few more years, whether we like it or not.

Firing a coach who just led a program like Nebraska to the tournament feels shortsighted. But in today’s era of instant gratification, I guess I’m not surprised by the overreaction.

TLDR:

Fred Hoiberg shouldn’t be fired despite the 5-game losing streak. While frustrating, Nebraska had a .719 win percentage since February 2023 (second in the Big Ten) before the slump. He just took NU to the NCAA Tournament last year—a rare feat for a program with only 3 appearances in 27 years. Firing him now would be shortsighted.
