Nebrasketball Coaching Hot Board

Realistically this is dumb, he’s not getting fired this fear no matter how they finish out.

That said in a game of hypotheticals give me Tony Skinn or Ben McCollum

I couldn’t agree more. But if we’re playing the hypothetical game, why not throw Anthony Grant into the mix too? That said, it’s hard to argue that becoming the head coach at Nebraska would be a smart career move for anyone. Literally no coach has ever experienced success at UNL outside of a couple years under Nee in the modern era.

There’s still over half the conference season left, and a lot can still happen. As of this week, Nebraska was in Lunardi’s "last four in" for the NCAA Tournament. That will likely change after the USC loss, but midseason slumps do happen. Hell, #17 Illinois just got whooped at home by 21 to Maryland and has lost 3 out 4 (USC, MSU, Maryland).

Sure, the Huskers might not turn it around, but calling for Hoiberg’s job in the middle of the season is ridiculous. Husker fans just can’t help themselves, I guess.

My only concern with Grant is his stint at Alabama wasn’t great

Hoiberg is 75-101 in his 6 seasons as our coach. Thats currently worse than Collier, Sadler and Miles. He would basically have to win every game the rest of this year and have an amazing season next year to catch Miles. Not so ridiculous.

Fred’s first three years at NU were undeniably bad. However, since then, he’s gone 51-34, secured a 3rd-place finish in the Big Ten, and led the team to an NCAA Tournament appearance.

For context, Tim Miles never finished better than 4th in conference play, Doc Sadler at 7th, and Barry Collier at 6th. It’s clear that Fred was/is trending in the right direction.

Will NU shit the bed the rest of the year? Maybe, maybe not. But calling for Fred’s job over this 5-game skid is absurd. Nebraska is the worst P6 team in the history of basketball, and canning a coach who just secured their highest conference finish since 1993 and only their 2nd NCAA appearance since 1998 seems a bit hasty.

Frost was moving in the right direction right before it collapsed too. It’s not the 5 game loosing streak. It’s the inability to coach fundamentals, win a single instate recruiting battle, the high school/portal recruiting in general, the terrible end of game management and the epic cold streak we continue to see every year. Fred’s tenure besides last year has been underwhelming to say the least. I always find it ironic most husker fans hate cockeyes acceptance of mediocrity but will staunchly say Fred is our guy. Do his results warrant a $4mill contract? Absolutely not.

When was Frost moving in the right direction? By going 3-9 and losing close games the year before getting fired? Not following that.

What are you waffling about with in-state recruiting battles? It seems like none of the P5 Nebraska high school basketball players even stay in Nebraska, even though there is a 'better' basketball program in Omaha.

I thought Frost should have been fired after going 3-9 but he got another year because he was “close”

Hoiberg could get Hunter, Wrightsell, Thomas or Traudt not only once but twice. Instead we have Braxton Meah and Rollie. Funny how all those guys play meaningful minutes on other teams.

McCollum or McMillian would be awesome hires. The people that think Fred’s one good season out of six save his job are the real retards.
I’ll take the guy that led us to a top 3 season in program history just last year over a guy with 1 year of D1 experience and a guy who’s coaching in the worst conference in D1. The entirety of the sport would be laughing at us, even harder than usual, if we fired Fred for either of these dudes.

Why does it matter what Fred is being paid? Coaching salaries are market-driven, and his contract reflects the value needed to bring in someone with his pedigree. Comparing Fred to Frost isn’t even logical—Frost was never close to achieving consistent success. The only reason he got another year was because of his name, not his results.

I’m not saying Fred is beyond criticism, but let’s be realistic: making the NCAA Tournament is a huge accomplishment for Nebraska basketball. If it were so easy, why has the program only managed it twice since 1997? For this program, reaching the tournament is a big deal, and majority fans recognize that.

And when it comes to recruiting, how do you know Fred could’ve landed Hunter, Wrightsell, Thomas, or Traudt? How do you know he didn’t try? It’s easy to point fingers without knowing the full story. You can mock players like Meah or Rollie, but what about the contributions of Gary, Williams, Bandoumel, Mast, Tominaga, Griesel, and Allick?

I'm surprised you consider NU basketball as merely mediocre. For many fans, myself included, the fact that Nebraska has made only three NCAA tournaments in the last 31 years isn’t just mediocre—it’s downright terrible. That’s exactly why we should appreciate a coach who has managed to accomplish something so difficult for this program and see if he can actually build on it.

TLDR: Fred’s salary reflects his pedigree, and comparing him to Frost isn’t fair—Frost never achieved any success. Making the NCAA Tournament is a big deal for Nebraska basketball, especially given the program has only done it three times in 31 years. Recruiting criticisms are easy, but Fred has brought in solid contributors like Williams, Gary, Mast, and Tominaga. Considering NU’s history, we should appreciate Fred’s progress and see if he can build on it.

Do you not think Nebrasketball tried to get all of those names you mentioned? Wrightsell went to a team that made the final four in his first season.

McCollum is 17-2 and starts 4 guys who played D2 last year. He is an awesome coach and most believe he will be at a major program one day.

I will say that I agree with most of your thoughts. I actually think that we probably agree on most things. The 5 guys you listed are/were great for our team but he has also recruited guys that have pushed the program down in the first couple years ie, Teddy and Verge. To me, too many things have gone wrong to just focus on the one season followed by the way this year is unfolding. It’s been 6 years and if this is the best we can do what’s the point in even trying?

I mean they definitely didn’t try to get him out of high school..
He originally went to a school that P5 teams pay to come play them. What’s your point?

You probably would have thrown a fit had they offered him out of high school.
I didn’t watch him in high school to know if he was P5 talent or not.

Did you?

Let’s say Fred’s season turns out terribly and loses control of the team. Here are some names I’ve kept an eye on since the beginning of the season that would be reasonable:

1. Darian Devries - Drake. 2 time Missouri Valley Coach of the Year. 5th year at Drake. First 4 years each had 20 win seasons. Before Drake was an assistant at the blue school in Nebraska for 17 years totaling 20 years on the staff. Maybe Altman could put in a good word in his ear for us.
(Currently at WVU, most likely Cockeye)

2. Grant McCassland - North Texas. 114-68 at North Texas over the last 6 years. Was an assistant at Baylor before going to Arkansas St and then North Texas. Baylor assistants turn out good - look at Tang at Kstate. Won the programs first NCAA tourney game in 2021 - wouldn’t that be nice.
(Took job to Texas Tech)

3. Steve Lutz - Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Has been an assistant at Purdue and Pickle Smoochers. Took a 5-19 team and turned them into 23-12 with transfers. (Took job at Western Kentucky, now Oklahoma St)

4. Craig Smith - Utah. Long time Miles assistant. Has had some pretty successful teams at South Dakota, Utah State and now Utah. Turned an average SD team into NIT teams. Led Utah St to 3 consecutive tourney appearances. As of 1/4, he has Utah at 11-4. Would be great as he knows the landscape of Nebraska.

Some others I’ve found while searching other teams got boards on years past:
Armon Gates, Oklahoma assistant
Jai Lucas, Duke assistant
Adam Cohen, Xavier assistant > Lamar
Alvin Brooks, Baylor assistant
Darren Savino, UCLA assistant
Randy Bennett, Saint Marys
Ty Lue
Dana Altman, Oregon
Chris Jans, Mississippi St
Jared Grasso, Bryant > Not coaching
Dana Ford, Missouri St > SMU assistant
Ben McCollum, NWMSU > Drake
Pat Kelsey, Charleston > Louisville
Dusty May, FAU > Michigan
Brandon Brantley, Purdue asst
Bucky McMillan, Samford
Niko Medved, Colorado St
We go through this every 5 years. None of them will work.

Why is better in quotes?

Do you seriously believe the Huskers have a better program than the Jays?

If you were talking UNO, then I can “kinda“ see that
