Nebrasketball Coaching Hot Board

Jans has some Scott Frost behavior on him from Bowling Green. I’d love it but I don’t think we could get him away from Mississippi St after one year there

I think he’s learned, but I can’t disagree. I know him personally and think he’d be a great fit in the Big 10. You’re right, it would be hard to pull him from there after a year.

Let’s say Fred’s season turns out terribly and loses control of the team. Here are some names I’ve kept an eye on since the beginning of the season that would be reasonable:

1. Darian Devries - Drake. 2 time Missouri Valley Coach of the Year. 5th year at Drake. First 4 years each had 20 win seasons. Before Drake was an assistant at the blue school in Nebraska for 17 years totaling 20 years on the staff. Maybe Altman could put in a good word in his ear for us.

2. Grant McCassland - North Texas. 114-68 at North Texas over the last 6 years. Was an assistant at Baylor before going to Arkansas St and then North Texas. Baylor assistants turn out good - look at Tang at Kstate. Won the programs first NCAA tourney game in 2021 - wouldn’t that be nice.

3. Steve Lutz - Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Has been an assistant at Purdue and Pickle Smoochers. Took a 5-19 team and turned them into 23-12 with transfers.

4. Craig Smith - Utah. Long time Miles assistant. Has had some pretty successful teams at South Dakota, Utah State and now Utah. Turned an average SD team into NIT teams. Led Utah St to 3 consecutive tourney appearances. As of 1/4, he has Utah at 11-4. Would be great as he knows the landscape of Nebraska.

Some others I’ve found while searching other teams got boards on years past:
Jai Lucas, Duke assistant
Adam Cohen, Xavier assistant
Alvin Brooks, Baylor assistant
Darren Savino, UCLA assistant
Randy Bennett, Saint Marys
Ty Lue
Dana Altman, Oregon
Chris Jans, Mississippi St
Jared Grasso, Bryant
Dana Ford, Missour St
Ben McCollum, NWMSU
I hear Chris Beard is looking for a job.

It was a night of embarrassments for me. My daughters rated hs team scored 15 F'n points in a loss. Even more embarrassing was that she was the leading scorer with 6. Yeesh. Thank god she's first and foremost a softball player.
15 points in a girls HS game should have coaches from all over the country flying in to find out the secret of this offensive explosion.

Drew Valentine - Loyala Chicago
Jeff Linder - Wyoming
Jordan Mincy - Jacksonville
Grant McCasland - North Texas
Shantay Legins - Portland
Niko Medvid - Colorado St
Austin Claunch - Nicholls St
Kim English - George Mason
Bob Riches - Furman
Robert Jones - Norfolk St

Ten More:
  • Darian DeVries, Drake
  • Richie Riley, South Alabama
  • Mark Madsen, Utah Valley
  • Terrence Johnson, Texas State
  • Jared Grasso, Bryant
  • Speedy Claxton, Hofstra
  • Matt Langel, Colgate
  • Jonas Hayes, Georgia State
  • Eric Henderson, South Dakota State
  • Dana Ford, Missouri State

I hate to go back and forth like this, but if this continues just get Hoiberg out of here. This plus the fact that he didn't foul Minnesota when we were up 3 looks bad on Fred. He gets out coached a lot. A lot.
I agree. At some point we have to stop giving him excuses for losses. I’ll take the wins and the brief high that comes with it but it is what it is.

I've alluded to this before on this board, but this is basically "Year 1" in terms of having the right culture to be successful. I'm not making excuses for Fred because he's ultimately responsible for who hired and who he recruited, but the roster Matty A. created was full of soft, lazy, entitled players that created a rotten culture in the program. Fred should've recognized that sooner, but the bottom fell out last year. He's finally laid a foundation for the way they need to play to compete in the BIG, but the roster is just not talented enough. Too little, too late I'm afraid.

With that being said, if they scrape together 4-5 more wins and get to say 14 wins, I could see Turd keeping him.
