Moving Forward

He makes some good points. I think yesterday was more jarring because it was Indianus in Cignetti's 1st year, and they're probably going to go 11-1 or 10-2 at worst. Kind of a perfect storm of coach, players, and schedule for them, but they sure do look well-coached and appeared to have better athletes than we did.

Besides the obvious coaching issues, I hope this game was an eye-opener for Rhule in terms of his approach to the portal. Keeping and developing a bunch of players from the prior staff is noble, but they all have low ceilings and have experienced a bunch of losing. With the $22M in revenue sharing going into effect next year, we need to go out and get some dudes.
Rhule has always said he only knows one way to do this. It’ll be interesting to see if yesterday impacted him one way or another.

You say you didn’t expect this to be a 9+ win team but then also turn around and are mad that this team is flawed. 7 win football teams are inherently flawed. If you were expecting something around that but also expecting us to look like world beaters every week, those two things are unreasonable to expect at the same time.
I was mad at our team's play yesterday. Tell me how that is "flawed"?

And where did I ever state I expected NU to be "world beaters" or a "9+ win team?" Yesterday we were not on the level of James Madison beaters.

Bottom line: Nebraska played garbage football yesterday and there is no excuse for it. There was no improvement, toughness, or coherent football to be seen.

FIFY.
A small point, but there is no 15 practice rule for bowls. People get that confused with the 15 practices allowed during spring ball. There is no limit to bowl practices besides the regular weekly hour limitiations. It would make no sense to have a uniform number of practices allowed when some bowls are Dec. 14 and others are Jan. 4.

People just need to take a deep breath. Our upcoming schedule is

@ #2 Ohio State (wagon)
UCLAbia (2-4 with 1 Big Ten win)
@ USC (3-4 on a 3 game losing streak)
Wisconsin (5-2… kinda getting better?)
@ Cockeye (just lost to Michigan State… we always play them close)

Win one more to go bowling. Win 2-3 more to play in a “good” bowl game. Take the extra 15 practices the bowl prep gives you and start building momentum for 2025.
Member last year when we had 5 wins? I member

I know Malachi Coleman is a whipping boy on here. But I will be honest, thought he showed more in limited last year in terms of getting open and separation that our current WR bunch is doing. They should find a way to get him on the field.

That was the high point for McGuire. People liked the job he did getting true FR WRs Malachi Coleman and Jalen Lloyd ready to play last year.

Then McGuire got the 2 Omaha HS receivers to commit. Then he went out and got Jacory Barney from Miami and people were thinking "this McGuire kid is alright!"

But now we've got Banks and Neyor and neither has looked that great so McGuire will get blamed for that.

Well, what I don't get on both Banks and Neyor is that they are awful perimeter blockers. That was a Coleman strong point last year. Somewhere the coaches stopped the don't block, no rock motto. I would also say Banks and Neyor have cement feet and trouble getting any separation. Personally, throw in the young guys and see what they can do at those spots.

My operating theory on that is that once we knew we were getting Raiola we had to scramble to get experienced WRs for him to throw to.

My guess is that NU coaches saw these two issues (don't block, lazy route running) on tape for them and chose to sign them anyway. So now McGuire is in the position of having to try to reprogram guys that have been in college for 3-4 yrs - but people don't change at that point. If you're lazy, you're lazy.

In the future, you really have to be more picky on who you bring in. You can't expect a guy who's been in CFB to all the sudden change his habits. It doesn't work that way.

Banks is a 5th yr senior. Expecting a WR coach to fundamentally change the way a 5th yr senior is wired is just not realistic. But the taters on here expect it because they're morons.

My biggest issue was that the defense, the strength of the team, got their shit pushed in over a “confidence” issue. 9 of the 10 single digit, hardest working, toughest players had a fucking “confidence” issue and gave up 56 points??? It’s a bullshit excuse for experienced players and completely put the offense in a desperate situation. Satterfield is bad but fuck the upper classmen laden defense for putting a true freshman QB in that position because your confidence was shook.

Everybody bitching about the offense. Where the hell was the defensive line? That was more concerning to me. Supposedly, 2-3 NFL bodies starting on that unit.

Defense was bad and Rhule/TW deserve a lot on that. But the defense has shown to be good throughout the games as opposed to the offense, where we have been consistently inconsistent in gaining points.

Would love to see more of Malachi. Malachi has to be as committed to that as the fans are, though.

No better time than the present. Get him in now and allow him to grow his chemistry with Raiola.

Do we think Neyor will be here next season or is his mind already on the NFL? (I know)

I think the defense beats bad teams but withers against offenses worth a shit.

The expectations for the offense vs the defense aren't comparable. While the offense has been consistently bad the defense has been more disappointing. We all knew if Indianus scored more than 21 points it was a longshot our offense could match them.

The scoring from this offense is fucking pathetic...

Sad Jim Carrey GIF

Rhule's approach of not flipping the entire roster upon arrival was a decision I supported because it's the right way to treat people, but it did not expedite the process of flushing the losers out of the program. We still have some mental puds in key positions on the team. Guys who have never won shit and totally quit when things get tough. We've never seen some of these dudes ever throw a counterpunch.

It's Rhule's 2nd year but it's the 5th & 6th year guys that are the problem. Truth is that our transfer punter is the only reason we won the two previous games with his kicking, throwing and tackling. It's a sad state of affairs but one that is still gonna take some time to fix.

For me moving forward means play all of the young guys or guys that want to compete. I'm tired of hearing from Isaac Gifford and some of the seniors that don't get it done. Play little Buford and a bunch of young guys and see how they respond.
