Reasonable article.

He isn't Pete Thamel, but it sounds like he has at least some sources. At the same time, he's not REALLY connected like others might be. He's mostly a lower-level writer that is attempting to provide the most accurate information possible, within the context of his connections.

What I don't like (if true) is the heavy focus on incentives. If we were a top 5 job I'd think we might be able to get away with that. You've gotta give a proven coach a reason to come here beyond incentives, coaching in the B1G, and that you should be privileged to be head coach at Nebraska.

I'll take the article with a grain of salt until the season concludes and we get more answers.

Like everyone, probably full of shit, but incentive laden contracts seems like such a weird hill to die on as a fake source.
Zero substance in that article. I believe the next coaches contract, if we get a “name”, will be one of the higher base salaries in the country AND incentive laden.

I would also never trust anyone named Oliver Vandervoot for anything other than proper croquet attire.

Unless it’s Mickey my guess is 7-9 million is going to be the rate.

This is my guess. I would expect incentive laden buy the incentives should be easy to meet. Doesn't mean the base isn't high as well.

I don't have a problem with the "gist" of the article, given that the base salary is "reasonable". BUT ... if you're going to go with a smaller base, your incentives have to be able to blow my hair back if I make 'em. BIG fucking #'s. YUGE. Then make sure that the supporting resources (assistant pool, NIL $, access to private planes/jets for crootin' trips, etc. are all lined up in a package to lay out your vision.

If you're a guy that believes in what you're capable of doing, that kind of package would get my attention.

This.

Where you really go heavy on the incentives is -- B1G champions and National Champs. The other fluff such as graduation rate, good behavior (ha ha), no infractions, should almost be a guarantee that someone will receive that money. You've gotta have that significant guaranteed money for someone to be attracted - and stay.

Pay for performance is always going to be the line for every board room. Article is trying to say it's a lower base + high incentive comp. Not saying the dude knows anything because it's the internet, but it wouldn't surprise me if that was TA's vibe.

This is true as well. It's tough to know how much context he was actually provided with his sources.

Everything in life is in the eye of the beholder.

Given what’s on the line and the current status quo for P5 coaching hires I sincerely doubt Turd will neuter himself in this way.

If we got to a point in our search where’s it was time to talk compensation and approached high level candidates with a “take it or leave it” offer we deserve to fold.

The concern I have about Mickey is whether or not he has an offensive or defensive system of play he believes in. He seems content to let Whipple call the games without input. In Mickey’s shoes, there would be no chance I’m hanging my hopes on Whipple or anybody else without input.

The head coach needs to have a system of play he believes in on at least one side of the ball. He can hire an OC with similar beliefs. He must convince Turd that he has a plan, direction, and “...here is how we are going to get there.”

Hoping you can find a good OC and DC isn’t much of a strategy.

Or perhaps what some are saying is true, that Mickey doesn’t want the head job. I don’t know about that.
