How good of a salesmen is he?

He’s at a huge disadvantage to get the job — no power 5/fbs HC or OC experience. We know he can sell a school to a recruit. But can he build and sell a vision of what he wants to Turd every Sunday?

I’ll give him the firing if Chinander and the promotion if Busch even tho I believe it was predetermined from Turd.
He’s coaching as well as anyone could with this dumpster fire.

But does he have a plan and vision he can sell? Does he have what he wants his staff to look like and how it will work?
He’s recruiting his ass off and offering players left and right. Will the next coach even want those players? He’s spending allotted recruiting visits. Obviously Turd sees something to allow him to spend time, money, resources and limited visits on.

Does he have the charisma if the team finishes 5-7 where Turd is still sold on him? I hope not, but feels like he probably does.

Mickey would have us consistently winning 7-9 games per season with offensive skill players going to the nfl every season. i believe he is ego-less enough to surround hisself with the best people to get the job done.

Our head coach does not need to be a coordinator of any kind. our head coach needs to be a man who can recruit, set a true culture, surround himself with an elite staff, and be able to adapt to the players that he has.

the list for me is very short before i get to mickey. Its Urban, Lane, Aranda and thats about it as far as “realistic” candidates go.

Agreed.
But one more thing in Mickey — for this scenario we’ll say Vance doesn’t (if he does I think the defensive staff will be good).

Has he been around enough quality coaches that are willing to bet their next x amount of years that he’s the guy they want to work for. It sounds great to say he can motivate and will surround himself with great talent. But can he get people that are talented to bet on Mickey?

Just curious. Have a feeling he’s in a great position to get the job but feel like it’s a lazy hire if he does.

I just wonder what kind of reach does he have when it comes to coordinators. He's fun to believe in but can he handle the day to day CEO type of stuff that is required in modern football?

I totally agree. I like Mickey, but he is such an unknown when it comes to being a HC. That's why it is a huge risk.

What we know:
  • Relates to players
  • good at coach-speak
  • good at recruiting skill positions
What nobody knows:
  • Who would work for him? Will high level AC's want to work under a 1st time HC with zero HC experience?
  • Can he recruit the the players in the trenches that really win games?
  • Can he hire high level recruiters to excel in areas where he is deficient? Will high level recruiters want to work for a 1st time HC?
  • What is his offensive identity
  • What is his defensive identity
  • What does his strength and conditioning program look like?
  • How will he do with the politics of it all
  • How will Mickey do with everything outside of just "coaching?"
  • After this initial emotional run, can he still rally his team when the going gets tough
  • What is his ability to make tough decisions in stressful situations, such as in-game play calling?
  • What is his experiencing working with and handling boosters?
Keeping Mickey as part of the program, would be a boon for NU, but as the new HC, I am not so sure about.

If rumors are true that we're not laying down major $$$ to get his deal done, we should start getting comfortable with Mickey. Nebraska football is pain.

To get whose deal done?

Nvm. You mean we'll save a lot hiring Mickey. I would hope so if that's who we end up with. Should be 4 or less.

I'm already comfortable with Mickey.

We're not going to be hiring a resume, we're going to be hiring a person. The next guy is either going to be able to turn things around or he won't... having done it in the past may indicate he has a better-than-average chance of doing it here too, but not having done it doesn't mean he won't be able to.

My strong intuitive sense is that Mickey will be a guy who does the fundamentals well, works hard, and will attract talented people. If he does that, success will follow.
