Kaelin Watch

The fail though was not going hard enough at the inevitable backup plan.
This. They’ve known for a while he wasn’t coming here I feel like. Yet they still didn’t contact anyone else

We don't know that they didn't contact anyone else and given all their known targets are committed elsewhere, I'm not so sure they haven't and it's just not public.

Still wish they would have pushed Kaelin more and tried to keep him warm

We'll find out what they did behind the scenes, if anything. Nebraska wouldn't have wanted that to get out because of Raiola, and a couple of the guys we're talking about are committed, so they wouldn't want it out until there actually was a spot (if they were interested). If they were working a Reno or a Kaelin behind the scenes because there is a chance at a flip, we'll find out in the next 2-3 weeks.
My optimism is officially dead Carm. I'm still optimistic Rhule can turn it around but the timeline is quite a bit longer. Sims gets hurt we're for sure a 4-8 team. Sims doesn't get hurt we could still be a 4-8 team. Just less likely.

Yeah there’s not much on the team that makes you think they’ll be decent next year

We've got an offense built for ball control (if they quit fumbling) and a defense that will give up yards and tds steadily. I'm excited about the defensive scheme long term but it's gonna take a couple years.

ANYONE who thinks it won't take 3 years to get out of the hole we are in is delusional. Its not just about talent, its also about -sigh- culture. Frost came in an just told the team "hey we need to have a winning culture" and then pretty much did nothing to establish a winning culture. Quite the opposite. Its going to take years people.

If Rhule has two losing seasons his first two years ohhh Nelly. The people will revolt

This year wouldn't shock me if it was a losing season. Won't like it, but I unless Rhule does stupid shit like onside kicks in the 3rd quarter when you are winning the game or other dumb fuckery I won't be ready to light the torches. What I want to see is clear improvement after his first year. I think we will.

I don’t want to say this whole recruitment is a failure for Rhule but definitely some egg in his face. It’s been such a massive focal point of Nebraskas recruiting and social media interactions. And nothing. And on top of that you lost a halfway decent qb would probably would have committed because of chasing a pipe dream.
This is a tough one. IMO - this could be viewed as Rhule's first major slip up OR not an issue at all. We probably won't know until 2025 which it was. We also don't know that he's not going to grab a Reno or a Kaelin before DEC 2023. That's still 7 months away.

Things I'd like to know but don't:
1. How highly does MR rate Kaelin?
2. How badly did Rhule want an early HS commit? (but couldn't due to DR)
3. Did DR recruitment go longer than MR expected? (now all good HS QBs are gone)
4. Does MR think Haarberg is a legit B1G QB? (or was he just saying that to boost his confidence)
5. Has Rhule known this whole time that he has a DR backup plan?

If I knew 1-5 I could tell you if Rhule fucked up here or not. Since none of us know the answers to 1-5 it's hard for any of us to say so.

Rhule himself said last week “Scott left me a dang good roster” … so we’ll see.

That is part of getting buy in from the team. What was he supposed to say? "Scott left me a roster void of talent so it is really going to be rough a couple years while I bring in quality players which we lack across the board".
I just wouldnt say anything about the quality of the roster at all. Maybe a “we need to keep working and getting better every day” would suffice.

Agree. I also think it was a direct shot at numb nuts taking digs left and right at Riley & Co. every chance he got.

Read somewhere that Bill Busch predicting 8 wins or more. I am thinking 6 or 7. We will not be great, but better than some seem to believe.
