After weekly conversations with Illinois offensive line coach
Bart Miller, three-star Class of 2024 offensive lineman
Caleb Pyfrom finally arrived in Champaign for a visit.
Pyfrom tried to enter Champaign without many expectations given he’d never been to the campus before after being offered a scholarship in January. The 6-foot-5, 300-pound offensive tackle from Omaha (Neb.) wanted to take it all in, get to know the players and spend more time with the coaching staff during his official visit this past weekend.
“It was cool. I liked it,” Pyfrom told Illini Inquirer on Sunday. “I got to know a lot of the players and a lot of the staff. It was a pretty good visit. …I wanted to get out there and see what their program was about and learn more about them.”
Pyfrom is ranked the No. 51 offensive tackle and No. 670 overall prospect in the Class of 2024, according to the Composite rankings. He also holds scholarship offers from Minnesota, Nebraska, Colorado, Cockeye, Cockeye State, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Penn State and Purdue, among others.
The Illini were Pyfrom’s third official visit this month, joining home-state Nebraska and Minnesota — two Big Ten West foes. Illini freshman offensive lineman
Brandon Henderson — another long, athletic tackle — was Pyfrom’s player host and praised Miller and Illini head coach
Bret Bielema.
Miller and Pyfrom spent time in one-on-one meetings discussing the Illini blocking scheme that helped produce five All-Big Ten linemen last season.
“It was pretty cool. It was learning about their zone blocking, their pass protection and how advanced they are in those aspects,” Pyfrom said. “It’s pretty cool to pick his mind about blocks and how he teaches it.”
Bielema and Pyfrom met on Sunday morning before Pyfrom headed for his flight back to Omaha. The Illini head coach used his pitch of sending offensive linemen to the NFL. Bielema has had 14 offensive linemen drafted to the NFL directly after a year he coached. Bielema has coached five offensive linemen who were taken in the first round of the NFL Draft:
Frank Ragnow,
Travis Frederick,
Kevin Zeitzler,
Gabe Carimi and
Joe Thomas.
Naturally, that pitch was made to Pyfrom, a high-ceiling tackle prospect.
“He was stressing how much they want to have me at Illinois, and it was being able to learn him personally a little bit more and his journey as a head coach, how he came across Coach Miller and learning more about him and learning more about what he would do if I would come to Illinois in terms of developing me,” Pyfrom said.
What’d he think about the pitch?
“It’s pretty impressive that Coach Bielema is the person who has put the second-most linemen in the NFL, only second to
Nick Saban,” Pyfrom said. “That’s pretty cool to see what they’ve been able to do with the offensive line position.”
Illinois was a semifinalist for the Joe Moore Award last season, awarded to the top offensive line in the nation, and has had four linemen in the last two years —
Doug Kramer (6th round pick),
Vederian Lowe (6th round pick),
Alex Palczewski (UDFA) and
Alex Pihlstrom (UDFA) — at Illinois.
“Probably their mentality on the line,” Pyfrom said of his read on how Miller and Bielema produce NFL linemen. “Coach Miller says he wants the nastiest people on the offensive line that go out every play and maul people. I think that’s really what puts them ahead.”
The Illini have commitments from three-star offensive linemen
Zafir Stewart, three-star
Brandon Hansen and three-star
Eddie Tuerk, a two-way lineman who could play defensive line. The coaching staff is clearly trying to top off the line with a big addition to the line.
The coaching staff pitched their ‘FamILLy’ mantra to the talented offensive lineman from Nebraska.
“The way the players act around each other. Everybody is friends with everybody. It’s not just the o-line being together, the receivers being together,” Pyfrom said. “It’s the o-line, the defensive backs, the safeties, everybody just being together. It’s pretty cool.”
Nebraska currently has a Crystal Ball prediction, which was placed in May, to land Pyfrom. But Illinois put its best foot forward and surrounded Pyfrom with Hansen as the only two offensive linemen to visit this weekend.
Pyfrom said he will speak with his father and, as of now, does not have other official visits scheduled nor a timeline for his commitment.
“They stand well with me. I like their program. I like their coaching staff, and I like the players. I feel like I can fit there,” Pyfrom said. “...It seems like they are on the rise right now. I wish them the best of luck.”
