Jacob Smith made his official visit to Nebraska and was back at Michigan this weekend for the second time in three weeks, and those are the two schools in contention.
The Cheshire (Conn.) Academy prospect said he is planning a July decision -- the date is not yet set -- and Nebraska and Michigan were his finalists.
"I am down to my final two schools and I am definitely going to make my decision before the summer is over," the 6-foot-4, 230-pound Smith said.
When weighing one school against the other, Smith said several factors will come into play.
"The school, obviously," he said. "The program and the way they run their defense. Stuff like that. How early I can get onto the field. Things of that nature.
"It's one of those decisions that takes a lot of thinking. This is a four-year decision so it is not something you make up spontaneously.
Smith made an official visit to Michigan during the first weekend. He returned this weekend with his brother,
Jerod Smith, a Michigan commit who was making his official visit.
"Their ability to produce (NFL players), and everyone has seen it, at a high level (stands out)," Jacob Smith said. "They've been able to win championships year after year. When you go into their indoor facility, you will see when they start winning championships, they win them for three years, four years in a row.
"I know I will be going in and not losing, and have a good team and a lot of good competition around me."
Smith was at Nebraska in the spring, and he returned for an official visit last weekend to get a closer look at things.
"I like the family feel when I go there," he said. "All the coaches there have been players for coach (Matt) Rhule at some point. None of them want to leave coach Rhule, so that is saying something. And coach Rhule's background in college football.
"He's going to Temple and Baylor and turned those two programs around, so I don't see why he couldn't do that at Nebraska."
During his official visit, he met with defensive coordinator
Tony White about his fit in the defense.
"I like him a lot and he runs a good scheme," Smith said. "They said I could play any of the three linebackers positions and how use me however they can."
