Evan Taylor commit: What does it mean for Nebraska?

Nebraska landed a verbal commit from DB Evan Taylor after his official visit to Lincoln this week.

Nebraska added another defensive back/athlete commit from Waxhaw (N.C.) Cuthbertson standout Evan Taylor.

The 6-foot-3, 175-pound Taylor took his official visit to Lincoln this past weekend.

Here’s more on the commitment of Taylor and what it means for Nebraska.

1. Taylor is a long, rangy athlete at 6-foot-3, 175 pounds. He could play defensive back or wide receiver at the next level. The Huskers like him on defense.

2. Over the last year, Taylor has been a well-traveled recruit. The On3 database tracks that he’s taken 16 different recruiting visits dating back to Sept. 10, 2022. He took four confirmed trips to Duke. Before his NU official visit, Taylor took official visits to Rutgers and East Carolina.

3. Taylor had 10 confirmed offers. Nebraska and Rutgers were his only two confirmed Power Five offers.

4. When you look at the type of defensive backs Evan Cooper has recruited at Nebraska, they all are very similar to Taylor. Cooper likes versatile athletes who can move around in the back end and develop. Taylor was timed at 10.63 seconds in the 100-meter dash and 21.74 seconds in the 200-meter dash this spring.

5. As a junior, Taylor had 38 catches for 528 yards and eight touchdowns as a wide receiver. He also had one rushing touchdown. In 2021, Taylor had 21 tackles, three TFLs, four interceptions and six pass break-ups. In 2022, he had one interception and 10 tackles. He runs 4.53 in the 40-yard dash and carries a 3.7 GPA in the classroom.

6. Taylor is the first high school recruit to commit to the Huskers from North Carolina since 2002. That year, NU signed quarterback Curt Dukes and defensive lineman Brandon Greeson.

7. With the addition of Taylor, eight different states are now represented in NU’s 2023 recruiting class. You also wonder where they are overall with their defensive back numbers and how many more spots they might have there.

Lots of talk on social media and some here that Rhule is taking too many no stars and isn't chasing higher ranked recruits. As if he didn't land in Lincoln and immediately start trying to get top rated guys.

How quickly we forget that he was after 5* DR at QB, the highly ranked OT Baker, Frazier a top RB and multiple 4-5* Dline and LB. In fact all of those guys were on campus during the spring. You remember the updates now? Do you remember how excited we were?

He tried. Those guys are tough to get when you come in late in the process and our program is seen as a project or a loser. So, he moved on to some different targets and had a bunch of guys come through camps that tested well so he offered.

My guess is that for the '25 & 26' classes he will be back after some top guys and will have a better chance on that go round.

Well this is interesting @Carm

they have another highly rated Edge who is considered a Michigan lean visiting this weekend as well.

this is what Callahan said yesterday morning

Edge Jacob Smith and Nebraska: Before this weekend, it felt like Cheshire (Conn.) Academy edge Jacob Smith was a lock to Michigan, considering his twin brother Jerrod Smith has been a commit to the Wolverines for months.

Jacob Smith made his third visit to Lincoln since March this past weekend. Each time he learns more about NU, as the Huskers have done a great job of grabbing his attention. Smith said he might commit soon but not go public for a while. It’s down to the Wolverines and Huskers. Stay tuned.

If he did decide to commit to Nebraska, I doubt he would announce it immediately before his brother's official visit to Michigan

Exactly. The two latest misses being:

Miami will add a local wide receiver to the official visit schedule.

Miami Palmetto wideout Jacory Barney Jr. told InsideTheU that he will make the short trip up to Coral Gables, a place he’s spent a ton of time at this month, to visit with the Hurricanes this weekend after Mario Cristobal and Kevin Beard turned up the temperature after a strong performance at the school during a 7-on-7 event earlier this month.

Nebraska is a school Barney is strongly considering and Texas A&M is another he saw. West Virginia will host for an official visit mid-week, and that will quickly transition into a Miami visit beginning Friday.

Despite the late push from Miami, Barney is excited to get a more in-depth look at the Hurricanes because over the past few weeks, the Hurricanes have shown him the necessary amount of attention to display their genuine interest. This weekend will be about showing the family the same thing they’ve shown the rising senior.

Following the Miami trip, it’s decision time for the Dade County native. An early July commitment is currently the plan.

This might be very meaningful. 247 TT said yesterday TT may only be able to take 2 of the 3 (Morgan, Carter, Esquerra) and 3 hours before he tweeted this Wiltfong CB'd Morgan and Esquerra. Before that other 247 analysts were CB'ing Morgan and Carter

Question will be - do we want him on a stand-alone basis or were we willing to take him as part of a package with Morgan?

another guy we had visiting 6/23 - note what he says in his reaction to his TT visit

OL Coen Echols

"It went great. I enjoyed the love they showed throughout the entire visit."

"We went out to eat a lot. My top meal was the buffet they had."

"My host was Caleb Rogers."

"That was the last OV. I want to make my decision by the end of July."

You can tell Joey McGuire is a Rhule protege. Of the 3 DBs we were fighting them for, Morgan (4 stars) Carter (3 Stars) Esquerra (zero stars - unrated) who do you think the 247 staff said the coaches TT really really liked?

Esquerra, of course.

I guess he is very young - they said he should be class of 25 by age, not class of 24- and his measurables are already crazy. He ran a 14.37 sec 110M hurdles this spring - that would have been good for 4th in Nebraska's class A state meeting. Think about that being a sophomore time.

(FN Esquerra became a 3 star after we had him in for an OV)

Everyone keeps gas lighting the issue. What about the 1,000 players between Raiola, Carter etc and the FCS talent we are getting? I don’t expect to get 5 stars or any 4 starts from outside the 500 mile radius but it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be able to get commits with other P5 offers and interest.
Cool.

You don't know much about recruiting realities and you don't know what "gaslighting" means.

But other than that, great post.
