Would prefer if we were bringing in guys with actual production. Absolutely no way of telling if this guy will do anything or be processed in a year.
True. This guy is for depth who will hopefully develop into a significant contributer/starter/star in the future. As someone else said, this is a Vincent Jackson replacement. You're not going to find too many guys with four years of eligibility left who have actual proven production. This is like a high school recruit. You take him because he has potential, good measurements and promising attributes. Like a high school croot, you have no idea if he will fulfill his potential.

I'm starting to get a little concerned about how things are going in the portal for us. We are losing what would be our leading returning tackler to Mizzou, we are losing anyone that had more than one sack for us (4 to graduation, one to LSU, one to FSU) defensively. On offense we are losing what I think is our best TE who had 6 starts, and we are losing our leading rusher that had 12 touchdowns that we literally just brought in a year ago.

The only guy we are replacing any of these losses with that has experience at a power level is a punter. The Miss State DL is showing high school film for interest, the Mizzou transfer didn't even play last year even though people say he was a five star so he should be good which bothers me because we are quoting high school ratings to make ourselves feel good like Colorado transfers.

Only thing keeping me sane is I wasn't concerned at all about Tony White leaving and he did, so maybe everything is just opposite my thoughts now. And maybe there is a bigger plan i'm not aware of and we have some large money saved up for some big time tackles, WRs, DL, and LBs?

Just look at where our guys that played for us are headed, and where the guys are coming from for us and their production. This isn't about getting down to 105 either. You don't get rid of Butler/Williams for Nwaneri/Moore. Ever.

Seems like some of this is spin to put the situation in the worst light possible.

We're losing our leading rusher and touchdown maker? I look at it as he is being replaced in the starting lineup by a much better running back in Emmet Johnson. I think we will be able to replace his 2.5 yard (on average) touchdown runs. We're losing our best tight end who was our best by a pretty small margin. He's leaving behind a pretty full room with lots of potential.

It's college football. Even in the before times, by design you lost your best and most experienced players each year and replaced them with inexperienced, unproven players. All playeres start out as inexperienced, unproven players until they get a chance to prove themeselve. Then you hope your recruiting and development has paid off as the next crop of players become experienced and proven. We have no right to expect every starting position to be filled by veteran players and then cry failure when we don't reach that standard.

BTW, I think citing high school recruit rankings for redshirt freshman is something different from pointing to high school ratings on guys entering their third and fourth year of college football like Colorado was doing.

Butler had 12 tot and 2 sacks, Williams was a walk on he had 5 sacks 4 came in back to back games then didn't do shit after that these aren't super stars we are losing, and rhule is the one that developed them so I'll trust him

This is all reasonable. I’ll say:
1. Gbayor-I believe the staff was more worried about losing Shavers than Gbayor so encouraged him to find money. I expect Shavers to more than replace his production in more snaps and another season under his belt. So what we’d be looking for is a backup replacement. Maybe 2. And ideally Rogers is ready to be one of those two.

2. Boerk-I believe that if we felt he was critical he’d still be here. The diminishing role of the TE will be evident next year and I’m not concerned we lost Boerk. I more so hope we can make use out of Nelson as he’s a better fit for body type we want moving forward.

3. Dowdell- not ideal. We don’t have a RB like him left on the roster. But I don’t think his production is irreplaceable. Especially since I’m doubtful those tight stacked goal line sets aren’t going to be a thing moving forward. And I actually would rather see us see what Parker and Nelson can do that bring someone in. Ives, too, maybe.

4. This Gabe guy- agree he’s not going to be a difference maker for us but I dint think we need that. We need a body though. And think he is better than Dylan Parrott.

5. Nwaneri- I believe he asked to red shirt. His production in a red shirt year of a true freshman season was fine. He did play, btw. I expect him to be a major part of our game plan next year and be good while at it.

6. I would like a top tier WR. If we can’t do that then I’d prefer seeing what the guys we have can offer.

7. We need a starting OT. This is the ultimate need.

8. We need another IOL, preferably a C.

9. We need a backup QB.

10. I Like the George commit. I felt our DL was either too OLBie or too DT’ie. This guys is a decent edge setter for us. Downgrade from Butler for sure. But hopefully Cam in a bigger role will make up the difference.

11. We need another S or two.

Overall, if we want to be a developmental program at some point we’ve got to play those kids we’re developing and not just rely on the portal. What we lost was proven capabilities so it’s uncomfortable. And the math we’re doing is comparing the losses to the adds. Hopefully the players who are sticking around and who showed good flashes are going to have great years for us.

Like others have said we have a ways to go but it does have the feeling of other teams playing chess while we're still playing checkers in the portal game.

How do we know we're not playing chess while others are playing checkers?

We don't know the true behind the scenes of which portal guys we actually want. Heck, they may get to campus and see they're demanding a lot of NIL just to cash it in.

I'm still optimistic about our chances in the portal but I'm also realistic and we are not on the same level of portaling as teams like Oregon, Texas Tech, and Baylor this cycle.

I will say that's where some of my calm is coming from, this is just the first window. But if you look at how we were using the portal last year compared to this year, little concerning to me. We are going after way more guys for depth than players that have been impactful on their previous teams. The most impactful guys we have brought in so far is a long snapper and a punter.

That said, we get one or two of these tackles on campus today. Grab that WR we have zoned in on, makes me feel a bit better. My worry is mostly defensively.

I'm with you here... Emmett Johnson is a far better back than Dowdell. The Dowdell thing is more just if we were gaining a teams leading rusher and gaining a guy with double-digit touchdowns, we are jumping for joy. Keeping Dowdell was important, but not detrimental.

Boerkircher was our best by a pretty wide margin, it's why Holgerson tried keeping him by getting him involved later in the year. He did the same with EJ. Worked with EJ, not with Boerkircher.

I guess the college football angle you reference is much different now. We are losing our most experienced players and backfilling them with inexperienced players elsewhere. I get that if we have to move a Van Poppel into a starting spot who they are really excited about and so am I, those are good situations. But places like Texas Tech, Mizzou, Florida State, and LSU are losing players to the draft, graduation, or the portal and backfilling them with guys like Butler, Gbayor, etc. that are multi-year starters. The portal makes it so you don't have to backfill with inexperience. We are backfilling with other teams' Wallins, Rollins, and Tagaloas.

Rhule developed them, or Knighton and White did? I will tell you that i've never been impressed with Williams due to him having only one move and basically not being able to play on run downs... but we actually played that kid double-digit snaps per game.
