Future of the B1G?

It's a pretty common theme to bag on ISU... They don't add TV viewers, they aren't a traditional power. People keep looking at TV as the driver, but I believe conferences are starting to realize geography is important. Secondary sports and road trips in major revenue sports are tough to do. Three day trips equal one 3000 mile round trip in people's pocketbooks. Attendance was trending negative in major sports pre Covid and the trend could continue as costs to travel increase.

They are an AAU member which the BIG highly values, they are a strong Ag and Engineering school, strong in several secondary sports, perennially solid in basketball, and a recent up and comer in football. They have built in natural rivals in conference. They also have one of the best, most supportive fan bases in the BIG XII outside of OU and Texas. Facilities in football are solid, likely second to only OkSt among the Big XII have nots. Filling in the geographic territories within a conference with viable candidates is important and will help build stronger fan support in future generations as more will have the opportunity to attend games. They are welcome in my book.

What makes sense in my mind is B1G raiding Pac 12 and maybe a team or two from the Big 12. Then have the remaining teams from the Pac 12 and Big 12 merge.
I would rather raid some Texas teams like TCU and Baylor down in the Big 12 with the top 4 pac 12 teams. It couldn’t hurt recruiting adding some Texas teams. Screw Kansas and Cockeye State.

It would be great to get one Texas school and one California school to say we're coast to coast and border to border.

When is the last time you said, “Got to watch that KU or ISU game.” Never. Adding them and no one else is a step backwards. They just suck up money.

Every time that KU plays... But I may be the exception, not the norm... 🙂

You know it's gonna be Kansas + ISU. The idea of having a Cali or Texas school join seems nonsensical and unrealistic...and rightfully so, in my ignorant opinion.

've always said the best thing CFB could ever do is discard all the history and tradition that separates it from the NFL and makes it special and become a minor league version of the NFL instead. Anytime you can be the lesser version of something, you gotta do it.

I actually would welcome them too. I know decisions have to be made based on money/tv/streaming/academics etc., but just as a random fan geography and tradition weigh almost as much to me. I would love for NU to be on top of the mountain when it comes to money and power and influence, but from the perspective of a 32 year old dude who happened to grow up loving the Huskers I mostly just want the experience to be fun. Playing some of our old conference-mates every year again and being able to easily go to some away games would be great for the fan experience.

Sure maybe Boston College would bring in some chunk of Boston tv viewers or whatever (random example), but bringing KU and ISU back into NU's universe would be like having a little slice of home while the almighty dollar is on the verge of morphing CFB into a passionless semi-pro league.

Sounds like KU can be here this week. Someone on The Board says they trust cujo on this one.

My father in law is a KU grade, and has instilled KU fandom in that entire side of the family. They are major KU basketball fans. However, Saturdays in the Fall may have just gotten a lot more fun if this happens.

I have to think that
Big Ten Presidents are driving the boat bb. Warren is just the fall guy

I have to think that if this is the case, that they will heavily go after the AAU schools from the Pac-12. It all starts with USC. They know that the Pac-12 will always be a "2nd tier" conference compared to the Big Ten and the SEC. Their brand has taken a bit of a National Hit over the last decade or so. If you get USC on board, then I think it's an easy sell to get UCLA, Oregon, Colorado, Stanford, Cal. Taking those 6 Schools gets you to 20. Ideally, I think you'd like to get to 24. If that means adding Kansas, Washington, Arizona, and leaving a spot open for ND, then I think you go that route.

I know that ND has their GOR stuff, but if you put pressure on them by saying that unless they join, none of your league schools will schedule them, that takes away their marquee games against USC, Stanford, and Michigan, which would be a financial hit for them eventually.
