Breaking Frost and Greg Austin

Which leads to the other thread about Frost and Austin...
Is it run game coordination and pass game coordination not meshing? Overall OC responsibility to make sure both are on the same page AND when adjustments need to be made are all in agreement? Do they all need to agree on in-game adjustments? Obviously they didn't. Totally agree on the need for more sample size on the run game prior to making a call on that. Overall the OLine performed like dog shit though...mixed in with a QB who STILL looks like a deer in the headlights when he drops back to pass.

It's everyone coaching on O. None of the position groups look great. As a team they aren't cohesive and on the same page enough. Play calling is still discombobulated. Some of that is having a QB who can't do what is needed from his position. O Line is not a cohesive group. RB's are young/raw/untested. Receivers - TE's barely used, we barely tried to stretch the field, Manning thrown to twice, but you can see he isn't 100% ready and is probably over hyped anyway. Betts barely played, Brown didn't play, Nixon didn't even travel I heard. Yes we are missing Fidone (who I think would have contributed right out of the gate) and our 2nd string TE was out with injury. But you can still see we are not running plays that are well timed or just taking what the defense is giving them. TE's basically not a weapon last game.

I could go on - but the whole thing is a discombobulated mess for the most part. We should be so much better as an offense than we are. All of these struggles and then add in how we shoot ourselves in the foot with penalties and turnovers at usually the most inopportune times.

There MUST be a lot of truth to the "can't coach at the P5 level" stuff then.

If Turd is the CEO of athletics (which he is) he HAS to hold Frost accountable right? "Go get 'em this week coach"? we play fucking Fordham!!! If this game is not won handily and I mean HANDILY...the time for Turd to tell his subordinate that serious changes need to be made, IN SEASON, needs to happen. Knee jerk reaction? maybe, but the apple cart has some rotten ones in it.

In all honesty I think Turd is going to give Scott some runway, BUT changes will be made and Scott will ask for more time with his new assistants to "get things right". Turd's answer should be no...it Bielema 1 off season, you have one off season or you're gone.

I'm probably full of shit and have no place in writing any of this b/c I have no connection to the team or any say in what goes on there. But as a fan, this is what I hope for...

Has changing assistant coaches ever really worked? I don't mean assistants getting other jobs and replacing them. I mean firing assistants and actually finding a better replacement.

I don’t know what they’re trying to accomplish. And they’re predictable as hell. Their mesh concept is called like clockwork. Don’t understand what they’re trying to accomplish with their some weird form of mid zone where it seems they just try to track block dudes at a 45 degree angle.
My football experience stops at the high school level, but we never seem to even try to get to the second level either. It's like we block east and west, but never north and south.

My fortes is not line play so I’m not going to act like I’m @slattimer but from my perspective our line play for the majority of three years looks like we have no identity and there is unsureness. We have no bread and butter or go to. Seems paralysis by analysis instead of I have sureness of what I’m doing now let’s put hand in the ground and be nasty.

I just hope we guess Fordham's defensive alignment correctly or we are foooked.

Kidding not kidding.

For those of you that know more about collegiate level offensive lineman, what is the issue with ours?

Everyone says their size is there so what is it? Just not old enough to be men, apparently they’re gaining muscle and shedding and weight, so are they just pussies for their size?

Is it truly technique and not muscle/size?
I just don't know why Pieper plays. He looks like a Bear out in the woods trying to find a tree to take a shit.

I think @slattimer would agree with me here that it seems we have too many run schemes and we struggle with execution. It should not matter if we were expecting a 3 man front or a 4 man front. You should be able to execute your scheme no matter what.

I hate how they block their zone play. Seems like it's a 45 take off track block.
They need to double to 1 and 3 tech as often as possible and get some vertical movement.

They seem too quick to get to the second level without taking care of the DL.

If you can't adjust vs odd or even fronts, then what the fuck are you really doing? Every run/pass scheme has rules. Those rules apply regardless of the front. The center IDs the point typically vs 4 down, and in my experience, a box or odd call is also there to alert the rest of the OL the front. You can still call a point in an odd front, but typically you'd then have to push the count if they're using a count method, which I doubt they do.

But anyways, ever scheme you run has rules that apply to both, and if you're players don't know those rules, you're screwed when they switch up between the two. I just don't understand that mindset of, well they came out in something else. Who gives a shit. power is still power whether it's odd or even. The entry point by the back will vary, but the OL that doesn't mean two shits. Zone is still zone. I'm assuming they've got covered/uncovered rules, it shouldn't matter. If it does, that quite frankly is a fucking embarrassment.

What is so odd about their mid zone? I thought that was the point was to block it like OZ, but the RB aim point is different.

They run mesh a fuck ton.

That's why I think they're just turning at a 45 and track blocking, because they climb to fast. Plus, anywhere I've ever been, or have been taught, or clinics, or whatever else. You keep your shoulders square to the LOS as long as humanly possible...yet we turn out of the gate. It's like they're trying to just shield them off, but all it seems to do is allow for penetration and no natural cut backs to develop. I just don't get it. I'm a big proponent of tight zone and outside zone. Tight zone is my favorite because the rules are simple, and can effectively pick up anything.

I think it's odd as I just mentioned, it's kind of track blocked instead of stretching guys horizontal. It's just weird to me. It doesn't fit into what I typically think of a zone play of getting doubles to the second level. They seam content on 1:1s and just shielding off. Hell, UCLA was running some nice wrinkled inside zone where they were folding the backside of the zone, which essentially turns it into ISO or Dart.

Why would you run zone blocking schemes without getting doubles?

I mean you essentially should switch to a gap running scheme and try to get some angles.

if you suck at zone blocking schemes quit fucking running it. so just bring in a fullback, run a fucking 34 iso get your ass to the hole & get to a linebacker. if its 3&1 double someone & blow their ass up. i know we have dudes who can do it. im fucking tired of this shit.

What we all can see is that, offensively, we are almost always outcoached/out adjusted by the opposing DC. That tells you about what we need to know of the level of our offensive coaches - at this point they are in over their heads. Talent-wise we should be a 22 and 11 team so far under Frost IMO, instead we are 12 and 21. Getting less out of our available talent than we should be.

@slattimer the one good RB run I felt was a mid zone with about 30 seconds left in the 1st. It looked like a different blocking scheme honestly. Oddly enough this was an odd front, but you actually got a good push.
