Fall camp thread 2024

“They’re not going to win the conference”

We're 'Tommie Frazier days out' from kickoff.

Fitting name to bring up since he was a true freshman QB who started at Nebraska – and did quite well with it as I recall.

The oven temperature goes up each day. On Friday Matt Rhule opened up about 30 minutes to the media to watch.

A few things noticed:

– Someone who made a really solid impression on me now as we hit crunch time is Micah Mazzccua, who has always looked the part. His offseason has come with challenges to meet, but he was working at that right guard spot with Justin Evans at left. It's a good looking interior O-line off the bus.

Turner Corcoran, who Matt Rhule said would be back after it this week, was manning left tackle, with Grant Seagram getting some reps at left tackle too. Saw Gunnar Gottula getting some right tackle backup reps as well. Gottula/Seagren have certainly emerged this August as possible top backup tackle options.

John Butler really is the Energizer Bunny out there. You've heard Tony White talk about it but there isn't no exaggeration there. He's throwing passes downfield 30 yards for his guys to catch. He's running through the footwork with detailed explanations.

Sam Sledge was taking backup center reps. Evans could surely move there in a pinch during the season too. Jason Maciejczak and Tyler Knaak were the second-string guards. Henry Lutovsky (calf) isn't back yet. Obviously he could fit in the rotation, perhaps as the fifth or sixth guy even, when healthy.

– Nebraska had walk-on running back Rowdy Bauer in a yellow jersey on Friday, he's been added to the 120 in recent days. Bauer is listed as a running back and was one of the players in this past year's walk-on class that Nebraska was particularly high on. Definitely a guy out of Norfolk to not sleep on as he grows in his career. Kenneth Williams was another noticed on the camp roster.

Jeremiah Charles, who got dinged in that Saturday practice as mentioned by Matt Rhule, was in a yellow jersey. Freshman corner Larry Tarver Jr., was in a yellow jersey too, though both were going through individual periods. Tarver has a lot of upside but has been battling injures through fall camp.

— Others who weren't participating on Friday: wide receiver Malachi Coleman and offensive tackle Grant Brix. Both were in yellow jerseys going through rehab exercises. Coleman was working the bike.

– Out of a yellow jersey: kicker Tristan Alvano. Also out of a yellow jersey: Blye Hill.

– Turner Corcoran, who Matt Rhule said would be back after it this week, was manning left tackle, with Grant Seagram getting some reps at left tackle too. Saw Gunnar Gottula getting some right tackle backup reps as well.

– Overheard: Tony White, telling Vince Genatone after giving up the goods to A.J. Rollins on a one-on-one "You ain't going to cover anybody in the country like that. I don't care if you're 10.2." Just some good camp truth telling and hard coaching for a guy who obviously has great measurables and has worked really hard since arriving. Intensity. High. Always. Also interesting to see if Genatone can pop up on some special teams with his traits.

– During one-on-one drills, even on incomplete passes, coaches like White are yelling "Ball on the ground!" Building up the mindset to go get the ball no matter what the situation.

Dylan Raiola and Thomas Fidone worked a one-on-one drill to perfection. Route was crisp, backer was toasted, ball was on point.

– I'd say Nebraska's tight ends as a whole looked good in that one-on-one period as tough covers. Nate Boerkircher got the best of young and talented Vincent Shavers. The ball from Daniel Kaelin was also perfect. Maybe the best throw I saw from anyone in the short time we watched. Rob Dvoracek was giving Shavers some calm teaching after the play. I continue to say Boerkircher will be heard from more than he's talked about in the offseason.

Mario Buford getting reps with the 2s. Fast study like his brother. Can go all over. From how we've heard him named dropped, it feels like at least a four-game guy. We sometimes forget about Rahmir Stewart but he was getting some safety reps with the second unit in one of the stations.

– Tight end Connor Schutt made a nice leaping catch over Grant Buda in one-one-ones between tight ends and linebackers.

– Matt Rhule has a deep coaching roster with guys like Jack Potenza working with the Jacks. But also Rashaan Melvin, a former NFLer, giving some really detailed instruction to corners on leverage. He was coaching up the likes of Blye Hill, Dwight Bootle II, Amare Sanders and Ceyair Wright. I get the talk completely with Sanders. He just has a smooth way of operating. Bootle earned some props from Melvin after one of his drills too.

– Another day, another example of Jacory Barney Jr. making a tough catch in drills look easy. Saw him pick one off his shoelaces last time. This time the ball was behind and high and he snagged it without breaking stride.

Jaylen Lloyd just looks clean in his routes, a guy with a lot of confidence. There's a reason he shows up in highlights, in pictures from practices, in a mention about the receivers about every time.

Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda, with his bigger frame, also feels like someone important to the rotation with his experience and fluidity at almost 200 pounds.
