Anyone dealt with a dog with tumor/cancer of the Spleen? Just found out my 5yo German Shepard has one. Vet said there’s no way to tell if it’s cancerous until they operate. Even then, there’s a good chance they’ll find cancer and that it spread to the liver and other organs potentially. I’m not sure how to proceed. Seems like a no win situation to me. Either operate and will likely have to make the decision to end the operation/his life, or wait it out until he gets worse and we have to put him down. I refuse to wait and see him in pain, so it seems like the best option is to enjoy the next few days with him and put him down. Any advice is appreciated.

Kind of depends on the cost and your financial situation. 5 is pretty young.

I would say if he appears to be in pain put him down rather than do the surgery where there's at least a reasonable chance the cancer will spread.

Also a 100% chance I'd do the surgery if it wasn't break the bank expensive.

The weird thing is he doesn’t seem to be in pain. He acts different and lethargic sometimes but at other times seems like his usual spunky self. That’s why this thing is hard for us to wrap our heads around.

They gave us an estimate of $1100-$1300 for the surgery which we can afford. My only thing is if the surgery doesn’t go well, I’d hate to hear that he passed on the operating table rather than surrounded by my wife and I.

$1300 if its a great dog feels like virtually nothing

Probably a chance I'd take personally. I thought you said he was in pain and you'd have to put him down now.

My tiktok profile dog has had two surgeries for swallowing hair ties and getting them lodged in his intestines. During the second one they found a tumor in his mouth. They removed it and sent it off to be tested. Allegedly it was a super aggressive form of cancer and the vet gave him 3 months. That was two years ago and no signs of cancer. My wife was an absolute wreck for 3 months.

Sorry probably didn’t explain things well in the first post, my heads still spinning a bit. I was just saying if we choose to not do surgery, an option would be to wait to put him down or just do it now. If that’s our choice I would rather do it now than wait and potentially see him get worse and suffer

Any idea how likely it is that suffering would happen? You know outside of the suffering inherent to life

Vet said if it is cancer she thinks the pain will get worse and there’s a chance the tumor could rupture causing internal bleeding and he’d die shortly after

I’d do it for free honestly.
