Happy to see this poll is going how it should. Just too much of an uphill battle to hire Rhule for their AD right now. At best it would be looked at as a "buddy hire" and that he "pressed the easy button" going after a friend.

To be clear, Rhule is a great coach and who we need, so maybe I'm just talking myself into this, but he's a program builder. That's not what the Penn State boosters or fans will want to hire. You don't fire a coach off a CFP appearance in early October unless you think the program is in a spot to win now and he isn't getting it done. Cignetti is who you go after, but even a guy like Matt Campbell has ties back to Pennsylvania as he was born in eastern Ohio and played a year at Pitt. He has a better resume than Rhule and wins quicker at places. Chesney doesn't have P4 experience but was born in Pennsylvania and wins everywhere he's been. Drinkwicz, Fisch, Lashlee, Huff, Helton are all guys with at minimum equal results resumes but no ties. Diaz at Duke was there when their defense was a top 10 unit and was a Broyles finalist.

Yeah but what did Ai say?
Following the dismissal of James Franklin on October 12, 2025, Penn State has initiated a search for a new head football coach. While several candidates are under consideration, the most frequently mentioned names include:

  • Matt Rhule: Currently the head coach at Nebraska, Rhule is a former Penn State linebacker and has strong ties to the program. His relationship with Penn State Athletic Director Pat Kraft, who served as AD during Rhule's tenure at Temple, adds to the speculation. However, Rhule has publicly stated his commitment to Nebraska, saying, "I'm really happy here," and has not actively pursued the Penn State job https://www.1011now.com.
  • Curt Cignetti: The head coach at Indiana, Cignetti has rapidly elevated the Hoosiers into playoff contention. His success at Indiana has made him a strong candidate for the Penn State position Black Shoe Diaries.
  • Lane Kiffin: Currently at Ole Miss, Kiffin is known for his offensive prowess and charismatic persona. His experience in the SEC and success at Ole Miss make him a notable candidate for the Penn State job Black Shoe Diaries.
  • Brian Kelly: The head coach at LSU, Kelly has a history of success at multiple programs. His experience and track record make him a candidate to consider for the Penn State position SI.

While these candidates are under consideration, the final decision will depend on various factors, including program fit, recruiting capabilities, and leadership qualities.

AI with references to actual sources.

Or I could regurgitate this in my own words pretending that I know what's actually going on behind closed doors like you pretend to do.

Wow - you actually did it. I bet you use AI to grade your students’ papers 🤣

Rhule definitely has the reputation of being a program builder but that's probably just because of the jobs he's taken. If I'm a PSU fan I wouldn't necessarily be expecting the typical 3 year cycle if we hired him. Regardless of what happens this year, PSU doesn't feel like it'd be a build from nothing situation - the talent is there, the winning culture (for the most part) is there. It'd actually be interesting to see what Rhule could do going into a program where most things are already firing on all cylinders.

Kraft will slow play this and hope that we finish strong, it will be more justifiable if we win 10 or 11 this year. Especially if we beat them

Old school boosters that believe in the “Nebraska way” and don’t wana give the money it takes

This shit needs to stop.

Nebraska football is #4 in FBS football spending*, Rhule has a top 15 salary (#4 in B1G), unlimited facility upgrades, very competitive NIL and has received just about everything he's asked for in his short 3 years in Lincoln.

Matt & Julie Rhule have set up generations of Rhules financially. It won't be money that keeps them from Pedo State. He went to high school in the area, played for them, met his wife there and is very close to their AD. If he remains at Nebraska, and is successful, I still think Tejas is his next/final destination if their job opens after truly turning NU around.

Rhule is well compensated for what he's done in Lincoln. Our program is in kuch better shape today than it was in October 2022. And because of this fact, it's more desirable than it was 3 years ago.

* IIRC, someone recently posted this. Maybe I'm not remembering it correctly. @Cornicator? I'll research it if needed.

I'm not talking about paying him. I'm talking about money to pay the players, which Rhule himself is publicly saying isn't enough compared to the other blue blood programs. No one's saying Matt himself isn't well compensated.

You missed my point; there is only so much money available. If he wants an unlimited budget on everything, then Nebraska isn't the place for him. Or any other coach for this discussion.

I've yet to hear one time that Rhule has been denied NIL funds to land a player. OTOH, I've heard (read on here) just the opposite.

It would take a lot of stones to fire your successful HC in early October just to slow play everything after that and hope your buddy goes 10-2 instead of 8-4

What splash hire is leaving in October, unless its one currently unemplyed?

Lmfao
Why is John Gruden on every fucking list
Because people like the Gruden persona and the idea of him coaching there or every other open job. It's nonsense and what these folks will put out there for interest.

He was a good NFL coach two decades ago. Dropping him into 2026 CFB would be bad for him and UNC like results for Penn State.
