Coaching Board

Bill O Brien wouldn’t stick around. Don’t waste your time on that one. I think we should go after a small college coach who has done very well with limited resources. I’m done with the young coach experiment

Curious as to why you say that. Given his experience in the NFL, I could see him not wanting to go back there. My cousin is a D-1 head football coach and in speaking with him, a lot of the guys that come back to college from the NFL are happy to stay in college because they don't like dealing with everything that comes with having players making much more than the coach. Nebraska can obviously pay top dollar for a coach, if it wants to and if you win here, you'll be a legend. Given the respect that Saban has always had for the Nebraska program, I could see him telling Bill that it would be a great opportunity as well.

This is where I stand with O’Brien.

1a. Luke #2ndChoice (Cincinnati)
1b. Matt Campbell (Cockeyes State)
2. Bill O’Brien (Alabama OC)
3. Billy Napier (Louisiana HC) (added in)
4. Marcus Freeman (Notre Dame DC)

I think that'd be my top 5 in order today. I might be higher on Bill O'Brien but I can't forget the looney tunes DeAndre Hopkins trade.

how about we keep our coach & hire a washed up proven coach as special teams & associate head coach

Unironically I think Chinander should be in the mix. Wisconsin, Cockeye, and Northwestern have proved you don't need a flashy offense to win the division. Chins has performed as well as we could have reasonably hoped and his players actually seem to enjoy playing football. It's pretty incredible they're still motivated and playing hard when you consider all the crap they have had to deal with (short fields off turnovers/special teams blunders, their own offensive teammates voting them out of a bowl game, constantly losing games despite putting the offense in a position to win, etc).

Being a good DC and head coach are two different things though. Chin has largely learned about head coaching from Frost and the guys who mentored Frost. Maybe they have fundamental disagreements and Chin taking over would reveal that, but he wouldn't be in my top 50 candidates for the job full time based on the available information. The coordinator criticism obviously applies broadly to coordinators.

While our defense is playing great, how much is it to do with Chin’s scheme and system as an amazing defensive guru and more with having super seniors?

I’m not bashing him at all, just saying can we expect a top defense year in and year out? I don’t believe so. I could be wrong tho.

I will say that’s why I’m so pissed though about this season, tons of experience on defense, 4th-year starting QB…and we will probably still only win 4-5 games.

I think they've done a pretty good job of stocking talent everywhere except OLB. If they keep it up for 7 more games, I'd believe it's real and sustainable

That may be the case but I think it's beside the point. Even if our success this year is due to having super seniors, we've still seen improvement every year for four years now. What I see with my eyes is that his players love the game, love to fight and don't give up, despite not seeing the fruits of all their hard work in wins. These are indicators of a good coach imo. Obviously not the only indicators, being a successful HC takes other skills as well, but it's certainly nothing to sneeze at.

I don’t believe he is a bad coach at all and will be shocked if Frost is fired Chin doesn’t land on his feet at a P5 school as a DC.

Chins has done a good job, but it is crazy to assume he would have any interest sticking around after we fire one of his best buds.

I think Frost needs to hire a guy like Doug Marrone to be his OC. Pay the guy $1.2 mil a year.

Currently makes $755,000 at Alabama. I don’t see him hopping on this sinking ship even for an OC role.
