You're absolutely right, this will be the narrative that is spun. That being said, Purdy has always been a high priority for Whipple - even before he came to Nebraska. And I have heard the Mickey really likes Thompson.

It means they don’t really know shit but if he commits they can say “we were first to report that Nebraska was a leading candidate” and if he doesn’t, they can say “hey, we only said Nebraska was a leading candidate, among many others.”
