Childress - Director of Player Development

Also, there isn't really any on court evidence that basketball is headed in the right direction...

And when we look at on field play, Bolt currently isn’t better than Erstad. Now, I think there is plenty of evidence to strongly suggest he will be very shortly. But let’s let him get to a super regional here first.

Your argument was clear and now you’re going outside of that argument.

You don’t have to stretch the truth to say you’d like Frost to win more games.

my argument is that you can compare whether coaches are succeeding in their respective sports by looking at how they do within their sport even if the sports are different; and

Frost has been an objectively bad hire to date.

How am I outside of that argument? And what truth am I stretching?

I would love for Frost to succeed, he just hasn’t show any signs of doing so yet.

I agree it’s definitely a big year for Fred but the fact that he’s already done it at a high level gives me a little more confidence.

Not sure what Erstad has to do with anything but Bolt won the conference this year and took the #1 team in the country to a game 3 in a regional at their home field in essentially his first season. Let’s not sell Bolt short just to defend Scott’s lack of doing anything. I love that you’re setting the bar so high for Bolt though. What’s hilarious to me is that we are going to throw an absolute party if Frost makes a FUCKING BOWL GAME in his 4th year.

How long have you followed baseball?

Not as long as you I’m sure

Are you at least aware that Nebraska baseball had kids on its roster this year that won two conference championships?

The point is that before we get terribly carried away here, I’d like to see Bolt actually elevate the program to levels Erstad couldn’t. Erstad won a conference championship and only missed the post-season one time. The baseball program was not in poor shape at all and if Erstad wanted to still be coaching at Nebraska he would be. That’s what Erstad has to do with Bolt. Bolt walking into a situation where he inherited some very quality talent.

Now, there are absolutely some very good indicators that Bolt can and will elevate the program. For example, the big time in-state talent is staying home. Baseball is easily the sport we produce the most high end talent in and we have been missing too much homegrown talent. Bolt is keeping a lot of it home and there’s not any indication that will stop.

Im not under-selling Bolt to do anything for anyone else. It’s clear to any objective human that baseball and football were in much different shape when the current head man took over and the on the field. Bolt has currently not taken us further than Erstad did.

Completely agree with everything you said. Frost has had time. Big prove it year.

I was lukewarm on Erstad. I think he was done a terrible disservice by having this be his first paid coaching job. He should have gone and been a bench coach for the Angels first and foremost. But what are you gonna do if you’re him? Turn down the job?

That being said, if the football coach would have neglected and missed as much instate talent as Erstad did he would and should be fired forthwith. We have enough instate baseball talent to be a top 15 program and never below that spot. I got really tired and annoyed when I’d watch the CWS and hear about a kid that went to high school here, went Juco and then to a TCU or Coastal Carolina and was in the lineup and doing well in Omaha. Kids like Max Anderson and Drew Christo aren’t really all that rare in the state.

I’m sure I’m missing your point, but the current football coach can’t hardly recruit any in-state talent at all now and it’s trending worse for 2022.
There was enough Nebraska HS talent in 2020-2022 to make us a top 15 recruiting team if we bat 1.000 those years.

You are missing my point. The level of talent Erstad missed and didn’t even try to sign in his tenure dwarfs all of the football talent the state has produced this millennium. Frost would have to miss on a full class like the 2022 one the next 5 years in a row to be even close to where Erstad was.

Well it looks like he’s attempting to do just that, from my untrained eye!

Holy fuck. That’s amazing. @klrgumby any idea what the limitations will be for this role?

He’s essentially Doc Sadler of baseball. He can coach and recruit on campus but can’t make phone calls to recruits. He will be great to help Christy continue to grow as a coach and will be a sounding board for Bolt. His presence will help steer people his direction. Now how long he stays here I have no clue. I’d say he’s a short timer for the job in many thoughts but at the same time think with his wife here this could be a great place to retire and stay involved. Regardless, this is huge for the program.
