Breaking the ice

Thought Martinez held the ball too long, and missed some throws. Does look quicker, which I thought was just BS So that was nice, but if he runs that much this season we are probably looking at him missing a game or two and fumbling the ball again.

O line was ok, not great, but the defensive line could just be really good. Not impressed with pass protection from 1 on 1 session.

Screens looked terrible, over throws, drops. More of the same there.

Marvin Scott makes good cuts but he’s slow
Yant ran against mostly back ups, but he is a load to bring down

Ervin showed something, he looks nice

Toure runs smooth routes, Manning is a freak, hope we can get betts more involved

TE’s didn’t show much but I know they’re
good

haarberg has a cannon, but he stares at his receivers. He’s a 1 read and throw guy right now. Smothers actually goes through progressions but looks like he’s hesitant. I thought haarberg showed better straight line speed which was surprising, smothers does have some shake but hard to tell when you can’t be touched. Haarberg probably has more upside

Lot of crackers in on D right now, but Morrison seems to have a little bit of something to him

Martinez looks quicker. Impossible to fully judge his performance w/ the one hand touch.

Toure looks as advertised. Hopefully the curse of Frank ends and there are no hiccups w/ Manning. Sure, dude dropped a huge play. But he's more physically gifted than anyone I've seen here. He's still figuring it out and look the fuck out when he does. Nixon looked really quick. Disappointed by what we saw out of Betts. Feel like he should be toasting walk-ons in the 2nd half.

Man, Kolarevic is quick. Lot of potential w/ him and Reimer inside. That defense in general really looked good. 16 yards or so in the first half? Yeah, it's the 2nd teamers and that's what you're supposed to do. But how long has it been since we've done that?

I weirdly feel better about the RB position. Scott looked better and showed good vision. Ervin has the most upside IMO. Give me Yant w/ Vokolek and Allen in a beat the fuck out of people formation. Thompkins similar to Betts. Feel like that dude should be ripping runs on those guys.

Haarberg is a good deal faster than I expected.

I was hesitantly drinking some kool aid before today, but I think it’s gonna be more of the same bullshit. 5 wins is my guess

Defense will be average/good till they can’t hold any longer when the offense can’t produce. Oklahoma and Ohio State will definitely light us up.

will be below average again and terrible in the redzone. I imagine we will still see turnovers out of the QB position and terrible screen calls called 5-7x a game which kill drives most of the time as they result in 1-2 yards if we are lucky or negative yards.

Martinez will get hurt sometime this year I suspect especially if the spring game is an indicator that they haven’t changed from the past 3 seasons and QB runs it 15-20x a game.

I seriously 💯 percent hope I’m dead wrong and Frost comes out and wins 8-9 games and makes me look like an idiot.

The entire game was uninformative due to the format. Touch football for 1s vs scrubs doesn't really show anything

I didn’t take much into account, but playcalling in critical situations and redzone still are at the same “scratch your head” level we have seen in the past 3 years. Martinez should have easily put up 4 touchdowns on the 2nd team if this is going to be a great offense instead of the 13 points we saw.

I think I agree. The fact the offense stalled out where it usually stalled out last year is concerning

I'll watch it tonight in full and be back to shit on the team pretty relentlessly
@NihilistWinnebago, true to form. I no longer get too drunk on the kool-aid, but I'm not near as pessimistic as some on the platinum board.

9. Hated the thud bullshit but I understand it
I still sport a gnarly scar on my chin from going to "thud" as a sophomore in highschool running scout team receiver. Turns out, running a quick slant when the starting cornerback knows the play call can be dangerous. Coach said "I think I heard a thud." It was likely my only concussion.

Edit: At least I caught it and held on to the ball.

Martinez is still maddening to watch in the passing game. Seems like with our improved WRs, he shouldn't need to hold the ball as long as he does. And for the love of god, why is he so poor on throwing swing passes?! They are usually at the feet of the receiver, or thrown backwards as a lateral. Usually it happens because he's just lazy with his footwork...he doesn't square his lower body toward his target, but rather tries to throw it with all arm while keeping his lower body pointed down the field. I really don't see the improvement from him in throws over 10 yards down field. He is who he is at this point. I think you'll see something like 2400 yards, 19 TDs, and 14 ints. from him in 2021.
because we practice inside way too much and believe it or not, theres no wind or weather inside

That’s fair, I’m probably looking into it too much.

Thats my concern about the defense. They were better last year but still gave up 29.4 points per game because the offense turns the ball over and can’t sustain drives, and that’s including 2 games against weakened covid rosters of Purdoodoo and Minnesota

I think the game also showed the rumors about Smothers not being very good is true. Haarberg already looks better to me.
