Nuku Mafi also apparently visited - a 2024 OL from Utah. I have never seen anything about the guy, but he tweeted about the weekend

Oh how I love seeing us trying to get some Poly Pipeline shit going again. Some of those young men in the pictures are massive and even make Donnie look small. Some of the biggest people I've met in my life were Poly's. You just can't naturally create that kind of natural size and athletics ability. Surprised Fonoti is in Utah. Figured he'd head to the islands or somewhere warmer. He was one of the largest Huskers ever and an amazing football player. Not sure if Urban Legend or not but word was he went to Misty's for All You Can Eat Prime Rib night when he was in college and ate 11 lbs of Prime Rib. Can only imagine the damage he did to his poor toilet the next day.

Talented group from Utah sees plenty to like on Nebraska trip

West (Utah) High School coach Olosaa Solovi guessed he hadn’t been to Lincoln since the late 1990s — that’s when Toniu Fonoti, who now coaches offensive line for Solovi, was busy earning All-Conference and All-America honors for the Huskers.

So when it came time to plan destinations for a multi-stop spring break trip, Solovi said he was eager to get some of his guys back to Lincoln for a visit.

“This was one we wanted to go to first and it just made sense to come here,” Solovi told Husker247. “These are great communities and a proud fan base. I think our guys are feeling that even more now they can’t believe the following — it’s just crazy. It’s probably the best fan base. We went on an extensive tour, they took us through the new facilities. They took us a lot of places and went to practice. Went into some meetings and sat around and met with some of the coaches. We were there longer than your typical unofficial visit.”

The group, which numbered more than a dozen, featured 2024 offensive linemen Nuku Mafi and Semisi Tonga, both of whom held offers from the Huskers coming into the visit. Solovi said Nebraska offensive line coach Donovan Raiola has done a good job of recruiting the Salt Lake City program, and that work was one reason the group wanted to see Lincoln. They’re on a three-school trip that will see them head to Miami and Oklahoma State, before spring trips to Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon and Oregon State.

“With a bunch of our guys who were national recruits, this is a place that they really wanted to check out, so we said, ‘let’s go’ we’re on spring break so let’s go visit a few schools that we’re taking some heat from some other big schools about why we’re choosing these three schools to go to,” Solovi said. “(Fonoti) has been trying to push that you can’t explain what it is until you actually go there. This is a special place. We were just really grateful and excited to be here.”

Solovi said he was impressed with Rhule’s staff and what he’s building in Lincoln.

"I’ll be honest, and I know it’s early, but I’ve been to a lot of programs and been around a lot of coaches and great men. He’s definitely got a different vibe here. It’s something that the Nebraska fan base should be super excited for. It’s just genuine. You could tell it’s somewhere he wants to be. It’s somewhere he wants to build upon what’s already here. You could see it in the staff, and I’m not just talking about the immediate position staff. You could see it in the support staff — the equipment guys, the guys providing water — there’s a different vibe here. It’s made it so good that our guys are like, this is their top three. This is a school in their Top three that’s not going to move,” he said.

Fonoti wasn’t able to make the trip to Lincoln with the group, but there were other coaches with Husker connections on the trip. Former Nebraska defensive lineman Manaia Brown made the trip — his son Taimane Brown is a 2024 linebacker. It was the first trip to Lincoln for the older Brown, who coaches at West High School and still has a fondness for Nebraska.

Brown played as a true freshman, but transferred to BYU to be closer to his ailing father. Solovi said Brown talked to the group of players on Sunday night about how much he still likes Nebraska.

“It was super exciting for him to come back here,” Solovi said. “He talks about it all the time. He went home because his dad was dying. I don’t want to say he regrets it, because it was nice he was close to home, but this is always what he’s considered ‘his school’ even though he was at BYU. He was talking to the kids tonight. He loves BYU. He loves the people there, but there’s just a different feeling. He was really excited.”

Solovi said several of his players were still raving about the Nebraska visit on Sunday evening.

“They loved it. I haven’t been here since Toniu played in the late 1990s,” Solovi said. “It’s amazing. I think Coach Matt Rhule — it’s a different atmosphere. I don’t know how it was with Coach Frost — I thought that was going to be great — but this is definitely a family atmosphere.”

A lot of those Poly guys are Morman. When my wife was managing a hotel in Moab she had quite a few Poly girls interning from BYU and Utah. Every time I would see them I asked if they had brothers that played high school football and if they said yes I always told them they need to go to Nebraska and not waste their time at the Utah schools. ☠️
