Yes. I was so pumped after his freshman year. I thought we legit had a 5-star talent on our hands who was underrated and underrecruited because of his senior year HS injury. He was being mentioned among Heisman contenders going into his second season. It didn't take too many plays into that sophomore year before I said, "This isn't the same kid we saw last year."
I think it was the same kid. He just didn't have the same receivers. His freshman year was loaded with turnovers too.

He was completely baffled by S. Alabama's zone defense and I think it broke his confidence.

Adrian Martinez freshman to sophomore year went from being fast/explosive to much less explosive plodding tank with zero flexibility.

Kinda like the Other Martinez QB we had. 🙄

Yup after the CU game it was obvious.

He actually had a ton of fuck ups his TR FR year too people just excused them bc he was a freshman. But he actually continued making all those mistakes his entire career. When you look back at it he was basically the same exact QB (mentally) for his entire CFB career, even the KSU year.

AM2 was as much a casualty of bad development under the last staff as anyone. Think he would've been a different player under Rhule and would have gladly taken him as QB last year (tbf, not a high bar)
I'm not sure he had the mental makeup to play qb at that level. What Kansas St did way better than Frost and Co was put him in situations where he didn't have to make decisions.

And he still had a fuck up game there too. They lost at home to Tulane in a game where Adrian basically made every wrong decision possible.

And you could tell Klieman was trying to nurse him and keep him on a 20% capacity plan (to minimize fuck ups). But even with THAT Adrian still lost them the game.

Klieman eventually gave up on Adrian after his injury. Even when AM was healthy when he came back he still stuck with Howard.

Generally agree, but Will Howard is also way better than most people thought at the time. Who would've expected that guy would be maybe the most high profile player in the portal and Ohio St.'s starter in 2024?
