Utah State intends to terminate football coach Blake Anderson’s employment for violating university policy

Utah State intends to terminate football coach Blake Anderson’s employment for “actions taken in spring 2023,” the school said in a statement. Anderson was placed on administrative leave Tuesday morning, a person briefed on the decision said.
Utah State said Anderson’s actions “violated both his employment agreement and university policy.”
“This decision comes after a thorough external review of alleged noncompliance with university policies that implement Title IX, which require full and timely reporting of disclosures of sexual misconduct — including domestic violence — and prohibit employees from investigating disclosures of sexual misconduct themselves,” USU said in a statement.
Under his employment agreement, Anderson has 14 days to respond.
In 2021, Anderson apologized after audio was leaked where he said it’s never been more glamorized to be a victim of sexual assault, as part of a team presentation with the USU police chief Earl Morris.
Patrick Maddox, who played for USU from 2019-2021, said he experienced retaliation and harassment after releasing recordings of Anderson and Morris making derogatory comments about sexual assault victims. Anderson said in a 2023 legal filing that he was never told about such actions.
Maddox’s lawsuit was settled in summer of 2023.
Jerry Bovee, the associate vice president and deputy athletic director of external affairs (and interim athletic director in 2023) and Austin Albrecht, the football director of player development and community, were also dismissed for violations of university policies related to the reporting of sexual and domestic violence and failures of professional responsibilities.
Defensive coordinator Nate Dreiling will step in as interim head coach, the school said. Dreiling joined the staff this offseason after two years at New Mexico State.
