I have watched them 3 times:
1. I actually love Aidan Chiles. Dude is pretty athletic, but wants to be a throw first guy. He does a nice job of throwing on the run. In fact, I think his ability to avoid pressure actually helps their offensive line quite a bit. Its a pretty bad group. They're getting beat in a lot of one on ones, even morso than Nebraska. Youngstown State pressured them a bunch.
2. WR's Nick Marsh and Omari Kelly are outstanding. Marsh especially looks like one of those dudes who spends 10 years in the NFL as a #2 on multiple playoff teams. These two wideouts will be the best duo Nebraska has faced this season. Both of them would be easily start for Cincinnati and Michigan.
3. They run almost the exact offense as Mike Riley from Oregon State. Chiles is damn good in the vertical passing game, and they will take some shots downfield. They run the ball less than Nebraska, and don't have much talent back there. I do imagine they will call a handful of designed runs for Chiles vs. the Huskers. Because they would be stupid not to try it.
Defensively, the Spartans play a 4-25, and its been a bit of a mess for a few reasons:
1. Their 5 defensive backs came into the season with only 19 combined starts at Michigan State. They have 2 transfer starting Cornerbacks who came from UCONN and Texas State. Both of them have been absolutely abused so far this season. Their starting Defensive Ends in that 4 man front only have 3 combined sacks in their career. They also added 4 transfer DEs in the Spring, and none of them have earned substantial PT so far this season. To be fair though, I don't know if injuries have anything to do with that. Starting DE Quindarius Dunnigan was banged up vs. USC, and showed up on the injury report this week. He may not play this weekend.
2. Michigan State added 6 transfer Defensive Linemen and Linebackers from the portal. None of them are starting. Former Husker RuQuan Buckley will see snaps at Defensive Tackle as a backup.
3. Their linebackers are good. MIKE LB Jordan Hall is a future pro who is excellent in pursuit and coverage. Weakside Backer Wayne Matthews is a tackling machine who will easily surpass 200 career tackles before the end of this season. Their linebacker depth has some issues, and that could become a problem Saturday considering the heat.
I've wondered why this line is so high. Nebraska should be favored that goes without saying. But I think there are a few things to consider as why Sparty is double digit dog:
Let's start with their offensive line:
LG Gavin Broscious has been pretty bad this season. He came into the season with only 2 career starts following two seasons with bad injuries. This will be his second career road game.
C - Matt Gulbin has played very well and has a lot of experience after transferring from Wake Forest following 27 starts for the Demon Deacons. But this is clearly his first action in the Big Ten.
RG Caleb Carter - he has also been pretty bad so far this season. Carter is a transfer from FCS Western Carolina. He started 18 career games there in 5 seasons. He was abused like Prochazkcka vs. Michigan in Michigan State's last two games. This will only be his second career FBS road game, let alone Big Ten.
RT - Connor Moore - likely has a really high ceiling after starting 28 games at FCS power Montana State where he was an All-American. But he has also struggled at times so far this season which could be tied to a new system and a step up in competition.
Michigan State's most experienced and best offensive linemen was Left Tackle Stanton Ramil. Well, he's out now and will be out for a few weeks. Rumors on the Michigan State board is its a serious illness like MRSA, not an injury. That means, LT will likely be manned by a RS Freshman named Rustin Young. He's only played 19 career snaps for the Spartans.

Pretty sure he was out there because they benched Buford. Shavers didn't help much on the play, but Buford took a God awful angle on the 75 yard TD run. Pretty sure after that play Buford hardly played and Guthrie was out there in his place.
It was said on this board that to begin the year the seniors would be back there at the safety spots, but the thought was that by mid-season or the end of the season that younger guys would take their place. Well so far it appears Guthrie and Benning are those guys, and the staff appear to really like both of them. I'm excited to see how Guthrie continues to develop, he was one of my favorite recruits in his class.

I could be wrong, but didn't Jones become the starter in Hartzog's place? Except Jones was at corner and Ceyair Wright was in the NB role?

I’d like to see Caleb Benning in Hugehog’s spot. Dude has a nose for the ball and is also a sure tackler. Good instincts. He’s probably like Rex where he’s still a year away, but I’d like to see his role expand if Hugehog remains down.
