Breaking We have our coach!

If it isn't Mickey (hopefully) the logistics of announcing is interesting to me. Do you get the name out ASAP in hopes you can get some croots and transfers excited or do you let Mickey lose a few more games and then announce so you quell the mongos and don't distract a team that still (only theoretically) has everything to play for?
I would be surprised to see an announcement before mid-November. I don't expect Mickey to be the guy but I do think you have to give him a fair shake. To me a fair shake would be not eliminating him unless/until he has two more losses, excluding Michigan. I.e. if he goes 3-1 against Purdue, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Cockeye, it might be hard to sell the fan base on another guy.

1. Urbz
2. Lane FUCKING train
3. Fighting Peters
4. I'm a Fan, I'm 40
5. Kyle Whittingham
6. Rhule
7. Doeren - Zero Fucks, I like him and the development of their OL

But if it's the Lane Train or Peterson, that's a home run.
literally the perfect list, well done

My guess is the announcement comes the Saturday after the Black Friday game.

You announce it as early as possible, Mongos go fuck themselves and then everybody has a Merry Christmas.

So since Urban just so happened to do it a few years before Peterson would, Peterson should be penalized?
Whatever you think of Chris Petersen, are we really trying to draw a parallel between him and a guy who won 2 national titles before the age of 45 (and had lost 2 games in 2 years at his previous stop)?

I'm sure there were skeptics that he could return to form at OSU, but his record was one anybody would take a gamble on.

Petersen is a fine coach. I will get on board if he is the guy, but he's nearly 10 years older than Urban was when he first came back and has 3 less national titles at this point and, unlike Urban, is not widely considered one of the greatest college football coaches of all time. It's not a comparison worth making. Urban has earned a lot more latitude than any other similarly situated coach.

Is quitting that much better than getting fired if we are looking for a guy with the passion to turn around a flailing program?

This is a question that only Turd can develop an opinion on depending on how Petersen answers it.

To some extent, Petersen's retired goals don't match what Turd is looking for, which is a grinder that doesn't have many hobbies outside of football. Turd himself said he doesn't have any hobbies and his family and his job are his two main things in his life.

Petersen resigned because the grind of coaching was getting to him and his passion was waning. Sometimes a break and change in perspective is needed. But he better have a good answer for Turd on why he feels now he's ready to get back into the grind and not have much of a life again for the next 5-10+ years.

All valid points. But considering where Nebraska football is currently at and probably unable to compete in the Sun Belt, let alone in the FCS, anything is an upgrade of where this program is at. Granted he's been out of it for a few years, but it doesn't mean he forgot how to coach and he's still better than any coach in the BIG 12 outside of possibly Gundy.

Anyone that doesn't want Peterson is a potato. The dude was cream of the crop when he was in the thick of college football. A couple years off - self imposed, not the Lubick kind - ain't changing that.

Petersen has the 17th best all time coaching record in the history of CFB. Saban and Stoops are 14 & 15 respectively. If it were to be him, its a fucking homerun!

He is 58 years old and technically will only have been out of coaching for 3 years come this December. He has spent 14 years as a HC with a record of 147-38. But lets hire MJ instead who is 54 years old and has 2-2 record as IHC. JFC....

No one is saying he's better than Urban. Urban would still be #1, but I'm pretty skeptical it's him. I'd put Peterson at 2A with Lane, tho.

IF, and I know that it's a big "if," but if it is Peterson and a verbal is in place, why not make it official and announce it this Friday? Let Mickey finish the year coaching, but let Peterson start to get a feel for the program and roster. He gets a head start on building for 2023 and you take away the opportunity of anyone else coming and stealing your guy.

Urban
Kiffen
Petersen

Top of the board list there, I agree. Urban a no-brainer, but probably not likely.

Kiffen would be great. Younger, extremely energetic, can recruit very well and has great offenses. Easily choice #2 IMO.

I wanted Petersen when Pelini was fired. I would be fine hiring him now, also. I think he brings a ton to the table. All candidates will have question marks, all of them. Petersen has a proven track record and checks the boxes on Turd's list. Seems most likely of the above 3 names.

I'd think you'd want to announce when you can take over the news cycle so this week would make sense if it were Petersen. Not a lot of high profile matchups this weekend.

Otherwise, you're probably looking at an announcement prior to December, unless the next HC is playing in a conference championship game, then I'd think it'd come out the following Sunday.

Of course that would be a tidy timeline of events so it'll likely be different.

Whittingham is a good name that I left off my list. Good call. I like Rhule a little more than you seem to simply because, while he is proven, he is still on the younger side too. Whittingham is 62...that gives us probably 5ish years with him, and half of that time will be rebuilding. Gundy and Petersen are a older too, but still in their late 50's. I know that Whittingham, Gundy and Petersen would all leave this place better than it currently is, but I'd hate to have to be doing another coaching search so soon. Just my thoughts...

This is where I'm different, and why I'd be all in on Urbz. I don't care if they're only here 3-4 years, as long as they fix it, and leave it better for the next guy. I think priority one should be getting back to competing for the West and winning the West. If the guy hired doesn't have that ceiling, I don't care, I want suckatude fucking gone first.

At that point, you make Mickey a lame duck coach. Let him get to Cockeye week at least. He's still recruiting fairly hard and the team is showing some fight with him in charge. If you announce Petersen, especially without any guarantee Mick is here next year, you drop a bomb in all of that.

I know this season likely won't amount to much, but if you want to build for the future, you still gotta work as if it will.
