Sipple wrote a column today saying that because we had "some" talent on the roster, Rhule was faced with more of a "reset" than a "rebuild". He's hallucinating. Over the last 5 years we the only P5 team not to go to a bowl, and likely over half of our scholarship holders this Sept 1 will not have been scholarship holders last Sept 1.

That's a complete rebuild in CFB terms.

This must be his way of saying Frost didn't do so bad after all

Steven Sipple: Matt Rhule faces what looks like more of a reset than full-on rebuild

It’s a complete rebuild to make the playoff or win the BIG, but to get to a shitty bowl and be competitive with most teams in the BIG it isn’t.

I guess it’s all in how you define rebuild or reset.

In year one of Rhule’s other college stops, they had one win. That’s a complete rebuild.

If people are saying this team has a legit chance to make a bowl, and they are, then it’s not that huge of rebuild. And as Sipple points out, this team has depth and experience at a lot of key spots, including QB. Not everything needs to be thrown out and restarted from scratch.

And again, he set the bar at 6 wins, not a West championship or anything. I think it was a pretty reasonable take by Sip.

There are schools happy with being mediocre. When has the aspiration here been to be mediocre? We didn't hire Frost with a goal of being mediocre. When did the context change? I don't think it has, and I don't think you believe it has, either.

But who sets the bar at 6 wins? No one.

I think even the mediocre teams are looking to have a winning conference record and a winning non-conference record at a minimum. That's 7-5 regular season. Realistically, when the bowl games are factored in, I doubt they are any schools that are setting their sights for anything less than 8-5. Hell, you can be 6-6 with a losing conference record quite easily. If you schedule 3 patsies you can be 3-6 in the conference. That's not acceptable LT anywhere in the conference.

A team who hasn't done it since 2016. We're just talking year one. Not Rhule's entire tenure. Weren't you just arguing that it is a bigger rebuild that Sipple was admitting? Now you're saying six wins is too low of bar? I'm confused by your tactics.

If Matty n the boyz can get a win against the fightin PJs week one I might get a little excited about the prospects of a pretty successful year….at least as far as a year one standard is concerned. It’s not essential, but it’d be a great start.

No, I am arguing that Sip's use of "Reset, not Rebuild", and his characterization when he posted his piece "that we all agree we don't have a train wreck", is what is deceptive. I agree with most of his article. I agree we have a much better shot at six wins in the first year than Temple or Baylor did when Rhule took over. But why recast this as Rhule only has a reset instead of a rebuild because a .500 record is attainable. in year one? It's clearly a rebuild. Just say it, and then say we have a decent shot at .500 in year one. Don't try to say things are not as bad as we thought, because they are.

If I’m hearing you correctly you are asking Husker fan fiction writer Steven M Sipple to be intellectually honest in his assessment of the program

It’s kind of like Rhule is saying to the team what Neon Deion said to his but instead Rhule is doing it by action instead of running his mouth.

Yeah, in my cynicism my fear is that he is building a foundation for writing Frost rehabilitation articles a year from now that say, "See, Frost wasn't as bad as he was made out to be. He actually left the program in fundamentally decent shape."

Guaranteed that is what will happen if we have a decent season in 23 or 24. Taters will eat that shit up too and think it's okay to go back to beating off to their Wood River Jennings posters on their bedroom ceilings

Lol that's exactly what Sip is doing
Watching Sip create the pretext for those revisionist articles is like watching da Vinci mix his color palette before painting the Mona Lisa.
