1609 - Henry Hudson discovered Delaware Bay.

1862 - The Second Battle of Bull Run began in Prince William County, Virginia, during the Civil War; the result was a Confederate victory.

1922 - The first commercial to be broadcast on radio aired on station WEAF in New York City. The ten-minute advertisement for the Queensboro Realty Company cost $100.

1941 - Japan's ambassador to the U.S., Kichisaburo Nomura, presented a note to President Franklin D. Roosevelt from Japan's prime minister, Prince Fumimaro Konoye, expressing a desire for improved relations.

1955 - Emmett Till, a Black teenager from Chicago, was abducted and killed by white men after he allegedly whistled at a white woman in Mississippi. The case was reopened in 2005.

1963 - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech at the Lincoln Memorial to more than 200,000 civil rights demonstrators.

1968 - Anti-Vietnam War protesters and police clashed in the streets of Chicago while the Democratic National Convention nominated Hubert H. Humphrey for president.

1981 - The Centers for Disease Control announced a medical task force had been formed to look into the incidence of Kaposi's Sarcoma and pneumocystis in homosexual men. AIDS was later found to be the cause.

1996 - The troubled 15-year marriage of Britain's Prince Charles and Princess Diana officially ended with the issuing of a divorce decree.

2005 - New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin ordered everyone in the city to evacuate after Hurricane Katrina grew to a monster category 5 storm.

2013 - A military jury sentenced Maj. Nidal Hasan to death for the 2009 shooting rampage at Fort Hood that claimed 13 lives and left 30 people injured. Hasan had been convicted five days earlier, and did not present a case during his trial's penalty phase.
2013 - On the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech at the Lincoln Memorial, President Barack Obama stood on the same steps as he challenged new generations to seize the cause of racial equality.

2016 - Six scientists completed a yearlong Mars simulation in Hawaii, where they emerged after living in a dome in near isolation on a Mauna Loa mountain.

2020 - Japan's longest-serving prime minister, Shinzo Abe, said he was stepping down because a chronic illness had resurfaced. (Abe was assassinated in July 2022.)

1918 - Tris Speaker is suspended for season due to assault on umpire Tom Connolly.

1922 - The Walker Cup was held for the first time at Southampton, NY. It is the oldest international team golf match in America.

1941 - The Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) was organized.

1972 - Mark Spitz captured the first of his seven gold medals at the Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany. He set a world record when he completed the 200-meter butterfly in 2 minutes and 7/10ths of a second.

1972 - Soviet gymnast Olga Korbut becomes a media darling at the Summer Olympic Games in Munich, winning gold medals in the team competition and two individual golds and a silver.

1977 - New York Yankees pitcher Ron Guidry faces just 28 batters in a 1-0 win over the Texas Rangers.

1992 - The Milwaukee Brewers rout the Toronto Blue Jays 22-2 behind a record 31 hits.

1994 - #4 Nebraska opens the season with a 31-0 win over #24 West Virginia in the Kickoff Classic at East Rutherford, New Jersey.

2004 - The US women's basketball team goes through the Athens Olympics undefeated to win its 5th Olympic gold medal, beating Australia 74-63 in the final.

2021 - Nebraska opens the season on the road with a 30-22 loss to Illinois.

2021 - Los Angeles Angels pitcher/designated hitter Shohei Ohtani becomes the first player in team history to reach 20 stolen bases and hit 40 home runs in a season.

2022 - A mint condition Mickey Mantle baseball card sold for $12.6 million, a record for a piece of sports memorabilia.
