55 B.C. - Roman forces under Julius Caesar invaded Britain, with only limited success.

1847 - Liberia was proclaimed an independent republic.

1883 - A massive volcanic eruption on the island of Krakatoa blew up most of the island and resulted in tsunamis killed more than 36,000 people.

1910 - Thomas Edison demonstrated for reporters an improved version of his Kinetophone, a device for showing a movie with synchronized sound.

1920 - The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, granting women the right to vote, was declared in effect.

1944 - French Gen. Charles de Gaulle braved the threat of German snipers as he led a victory march in Paris, which had just been liberated by the Allies from Nazi occupation.

1957 - The Soviet Union announced it had successfully tested an intercontinental ballistic missile.

1958 - Alaskans went to the polls to overwhelmingly vote in favor of statehood.

1968 - The Democratic National Convention opened in Chicago; the four-day event that resulted in the nomination of Hubert H. Humphrey for president was marked by a bloody police crackdown on antiwar protesters in the streets.

1974 - Aviator Charles Lindbergh, the first man to fly solo, nonstop across the Atlantic Ocean, died.

1978 - Cardinal Albino Luciani of Venice was elected pope following the death of Paul VI; the new pontiff took the name Pope John Paul I. (However, he died just over a month later.)

1985 - Thirteen-year-old AIDS patient Ryan White began "attending" classes at Western Middle School in Kokomo, Indiana, via a telephone hook-up at his home -- school officials had barred Ryan from attending classes in person.

2013 - President Barack Obama bestowed the Medal of Honor on Army Staff Sgt. Ty Carter, who'd risked his life to save an injured soldier, resupply ammunition to his comrades and render first aid during intense fighting in a remote mountain outpost in Afghanistan.

2022 - An affidavit released by the FBI showed that 14 of the 15 boxes recovered from former President Donald Trump's Florida estate contained classified documents, many of them top secret, mixed in with miscellaneous newspapers, magazines and personal correspondence.

1939 - The first televised MLB game occurred, featuring a double-header between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Cincinnati Reds.

1961 - The International Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto opened. The project had been approved on September 11, 1943.

1971 - Bobby Orr signs the first million dollar contract in NHL history with the Boston Bruins.

1987 - Paul Molitor ends a 39-game MLB hitting streak.

2016 - San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick kneels in protest during the U.S. national anthem at San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium, objecting to racial injustice and police brutality in the U.S.

2020 - All three scheduled NBA playoff games were postponed, with players choosing to boycott in their strongest statement yet against racial injustice. (The games resumed three days later, after players and owners agreed to expand initiatives, many tied to increased voting awareness and opportunities.)
