1533 - Atahualpa, the last ruler of the Incas, was murdered as Francisco Pizarro completed his conquest of Peru.

1632 - English philosopher John Locke was born in Somerset.

1786 - Shays's Rebellion, an insurrection of Massachusetts farmers against the state government, began.

1814 - During the War of 1812, Alexandria, Virginia, formally surrendered to British military forces, which occupied the city until September 3.

1842 - The Treaty of Nanking was signed, ending the Opium Wars and ceding the island of Hong Kong to Britain.

1862 - The Bureau of Engraving and Printing began operations at the United States Treasury.

1877 - Brigham Young died in Salt Lake City, Utah.

1944 - More than 15,000 American troops of the 28th Infantry Division marched down the Champs Elysees in Paris as the French capital continued to celebrate its liberation from the Nazis.

1949 - The Soviet Union tested their first atomic bomb.

1957 - South Carolina Sen. Strom Thurmond ended the longest filibuster in U.S. Senate history, speaking for more than 24 hours against a civil rights bill. (The bill would ultimately pass.)

1966 - The Beatles played their last major live concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.

1991 - The Supreme Soviet, the parliament of the Soviet Union, suspended all activities of the Communist Party, effectively bringing an end to the institution.

2005 - Hurricane Katrina slammed into the U.S. Gulf Coast, destroying beachfront towns in Mississippi and Louisiana, displacing more than a million people and killing more than 1,800.

2008 - Republican presidential nominee John McCain picked Sarah Palin, a maverick conservative who had been governor of Alaska for less than two years, to be his running mate.

2013 - In a sweeping new policy statement, the Justice Department said it would not stand in the way of states that wanted to legalize, tax and regulate marijuana as long as there were effective controls to keep marijuana away from kids, the black market and federal property.

2018 - The government reported that the economy had grown at a strong 4.2 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter, the best showing in nearly four years.

2019 - President Donald Trump said the United States planned to withdraw more than 5,000 troops from Afghanistan, and would then determine future drawdowns.

2022 - NASA called off the debut launch of its powerful new moon rocket after a last-minute cascade of problems, including unexplained trouble related to an engine. (The rocket would not take flight until November.)

1885 - The first prizefight under the Marquis of Queensberry Rules was held in Cincinnati, OH. John L. Sullivan defeated Dominick McCaffery in six rounds.

1971 - Hank Aaron became the first baseball player in the National League to hit 100 or more runs in each of 11 seasons.

1977 - Lou Brock brought his total of stolen bases to 893. The record he beat was held by Ty Cobb for 49 years.

1983 - #1 Nebraska defeats #4 Penn State 44-6 in the Kickoff Classic in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

1987 - Nolan Ryan of the Houston Astros records his 200th strikeout for a record 11th season.

1994 - Mario Lemieux announced that he would be taking a medical leave of absence due to fatigue, an aftereffect of his 1993 radiation treatments. He would sit out the National Hockey Leagues (NHL) 1994-95 season.

1998 - #4 Nebraska defeats Louisiana Tech 56-27 to open the season, which also marked the head coaching debut of Frank Solich.

2012 - The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency strips Lance Armstrong of his seven Tour de France titles.

2013 - The NFL agreed to pay $765 million to settle lawsuits from thousands of former players who developed dementia or other concussion-related health problems they say were caused by the on-field clashes.

2018 - Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers signs a record contract extension at four years worth $134 million, rising to a possible $180 million and with a record $103 million in guarantees.

2022 - Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals hits his 694th career home run off of a MLB record 450th different pitcher.
