I probably put less emphasis on overall record than most given this is a small sample size and W/L is less important IMO than overall picture. Easily could and should have been an 8 or 9 win season with different bounces against USC, Cockeye, Ohio St., and Illinois. Indiana and, to a lesser extent, UCLA were only real black marks this year.
I think we were banking more on being able to execute the manball+good defense script and that really only worked against CU as far as decent opponents went. Between Corc's injury and Mazooka's dry pp, plus some mixed success w/ Dowdell w/ duo (which seemed to be our identity run play most of the year), we just never seemed to have a reliable run game.
In light of that, Raiola overplayed expectations IMO. I do not think that we necessarily expected him to be the main engine of the offense, and that was a big ask for a true freshman given some of our talent shortfalls. Needs to clean up some of the mechanics when the pocket breaks down and he's playing unscripted.
Dana plus portal should help next year, but we need to add OL in the portal if we're really going to make a run. Numbers say we were pretty efficient on offense, but lacked explosiveness. Shot plays were pretty much non-existent in B1G play and we had limited explosive run game. Cue Dana again.
Generally good defense, but not good enough to execute the full B1G west script, esp given offensive hiccups. 3rd & Tony was a problem all year, between limited success on third down pressure and consistent coverage lapses.
Special teams unfortunately speak for themselves.
