Thoughts on the season

Thoughts....

Dylan was a great true freshman. He did some dumb shit like any first year player, but he also carried the heavy weight of expectation better than anyone we have seen in a long time. If this is his starting point then nobody can be dissatisfied.

Replacing Nash and Ty is gonna be near impossible. The defense is gonna look so different next year just on that alone. I also don't think you can dip into the portal to replace those types of contributions. BC basically didn't have a single answer for Ty. He was wrecking shop most of the day.

The best thing a team can do against us in the 4th quarter is either make us kick or field a punt. It always ends up being the best play for the opposing team.

Magahee and Shavers are legit. NFM.

Fidone has the agility of an astronaut during a spacewalk on the surface of the moon.

Lutovsky put together a pretty good last half of the year. Or am I smoking crack?

If the bowl game was played in better conditions we probably win by 40.

Jones should get plenty of run next year. I'm thinking safety.

I silently pumped my first when Rahmir scored. Then I did it again when he iced the game. That final run was better than any touchdown. Good for him.

I wasn't angry about Rhule's crazy decisions this game. He was trying to reward seniors like Gifford and Buschini in their final game. It might piss fans off but those guys will love him forever for those moments so fuck what the fans think.

Foley: Is it too late for me to sneak a wrapped shit under his Christmas tree?

Shit, my only complaint was he didn’t try to get Ty the TD when we put him in at the goal line.

I agree. Thought Luto put together a nice run to end the year.

Luto and Jenkins are probably your answers at guard next year. Gottula started the bowl game but he has gotten the hook a few times throughout the season which is to be expected as a rsFr asked to fill in as a tackle.

I'm not sure if Corc or Teddy have made their 2025 plans known yet and there's lots of good reasons to move them on, but I'd keep an open mind given the lack of 4th and 5th year lineman currently on the roster. They definitely should keep at it in the portal to find tackles and a center if available, but I wouldn't hurry to close the door in the event you strike out.

First half was fine
Second half was not good
Bowl game probably makes the situation look rozier than it probably should be.

My Big Tone's Piss Burning Hot Questions (no order)
1. Can Raiola sort out his mechanics and improve accuracy? I think he's got the arm strength to do what he needs to, but his mechanics break down bigly leading to accuracy issues especially throwing down field.
2. Can special teams improve significantly? Portal acquisitions will help but punt protection and coverage units are a horror show and that can't continue.
3. What's the OL look like? Looked good today and the interior is off to a good start with Jenkins and Luto. Is Gottula ready to be the show at LT? RT and C portal acquisitions are a must or you're gonna be green as shit at 3 of the 5 line positions.
4. Is Butler blitz happy or was this just the game plan for BC? Lots of blitzes and pressures really put BC on the back foot.
5. How do they get pressure with 4? Ochoa got some run today. Is he a piece going forward or just the only pass rushing DL guy who didn't bolt? Can McGahee start to get home? Davis and RVP?
6. Can the secondary take a step forward? They were without Tommi Hill for large parts of the year, but Wright, Hugehog, and Buford are back. Marshall joins and Blye Hill and Donovan Jones will have another year under their belt, can they start to disrupt teams?
7. RB2. Ives, Nelson, Booth, Parker. Who is it? Is it a committee? Obviously the bowl game was less of an audition for the guys on campus than one would expect given Rahmir. Lots of talent, no experience or results to date.
8. Who are the LBs? Lot of Wright, Bullock, and Sherman today. Can't play Shavers and McGahee every down next year so who will emerge or be acquired?
9. Is Hohl the real deal? For the small stretch when snapping wasn't FUBAR, Hohl was banging them through. Aberration or legit?
10. How will the coordinators change the offense and defense with a full off-season?
Bahe and Ruud made a good point after the Cockeye game. They thought Raiola should lose 10-15 pounds pounds, so he is a step quicker. They weren’t hating on him, but they think it could put some more stress on a defense. They also talked about the mechanics stuff.

I don't disagree. He's athletic enough to run. I'd never make it a staple of the offense but he's fine enough to keep teams honest. More giddy up would help him convert short yardage which would help a lot

He needs to learn to quit overcompensating with his arm. He can mostly get balls into the area of where they need to be just on his arm alone but too much falling back and not stepping into throws probably cost him 5-6 TDs

Sometimes I think he tries to place the ball too much instead of letting it rip which is funny because it’s the opposite of a lot of our old qbs who had issues with touch and layering a pass. He definitely has the potential to get there if he cleans up his mechanics.

An off-season of film study will help him too. Way too many open guys that he just didn't see. Dana should help him a lot though with simplifying things down and putting less on him

With Raiola and running, he doesn’t have the sense of when to run and where to take off towards. He’s like me when the pressure comes on CFB 25. I can never escape it.

Hopefully that sense will come with experience but not sure he does it enough to gain that sense.

Id like him to hold the wait but build some more muscle to break tackles when they pressure comes. Stronger legs and abs for better balance.

He's never gonna be a big run threat QB, but he needs to (and can) be better than what he was as a true frosh. He needs to tighten up his frame - lose 10 lbs of chub, get a bit leaner and quicker. He also needs to learn when to run and use his legs. Needs to understand how being able to do that makes it much tougher to defend us.

His arm strength is not an issue. He rarely steps into throws much, too often footwork is wonky on release and/or throwing back-shoulder stuff. Footwork will help with all the mechanics. He isn't the type of QB to want to zip a ball with heat, he prefers to throw a catchable ball. I think his acuracy is very good - haven't looked up his completion % but I believe it is pretty high. Some will say that is because of a lot of shorter passes, which is somewhat true, but he is an accurate thrower. His long ball % and throws need to improve a lot, though. Proper footwork and using his legs instead of mostly just his arm will help with this. So will having a better OC and receivers who get open better deep.

Holgs being our permanent OC is gonna really help DR and the entire offense. DR will have all offseason and spring ball (then fall camp) with Holgs to improve where he needs to, and I believe he will. Holgs knows his shit, and is a no-nonsense coach who doesn't seem like a coddler. This is nothing but good for DR and our entire offense.

His completion percentage as 66% going into yesterday. Personally I've been a bit let down by his deep ball, which I think is largely due to his shitty mechanics, but he seems real good in the intermediate game. Maybe @Jim14510 has PFF passing chart stats that make me look like an idiot though

He ended up at 67% for the year, which includes a 48% vs Rutgers and 51% vs UCLA (both very tough conditions). Take those two out and I’m guessing he’s 70%+. Outside of the deep throws, he’s very accurate imo. There was also an uptick in his completion percentage after Dana took over (71, 73, 68, 74).

I'd imagine compared to other P2 QB's his deep ball at 34% isn't bad.

I'll be generous and give a C- with the bowl victory and securing Dana as OC. Regular season was a D for me.

The good:
-Raiola has all the tools to be a great player. Needs to improve on some things (like deep balls) but to be expected for his experience level.
-Offense looked much better under Dana.
-Some decent young talent that stuck around.

The bad:
-The team still loses in maddening ways. I thought that would end with the Frost regime but it carried over.
-Special Teams is abhorrent. Foley should have been canned a while ago.

We need to do better than a C- based on the infrastructure and support this program has. We're still below expectations IMO.
