I think the "Nebraska way" criticism has become kind of a nonsensical punching bag.
The core of the idea is toughness, hard work, & generally carrying yourself in a way you can be proud of. We were always seeking out competitive advantages, innovation, and trying to find edges where we could, particularly finding solutions that best suit the somewhat unique aspects of our state. Really it's the opposite of the "stuck in the past" criticism. What those innovations & edges look like will vary in each era of CFB.
