Special Teams Coach Hot Board

He could also consider hiring someone else elite at the job, since he had the funds to make the previous guy one of the two highest paid ST coaches in the country.
None of it makes any sense. I am going to stop trying to make sense of it.

Ya, it's your room temp IQ.

"I think we will be better than we were."
Okay, but I think you’re missing my point. He didn’t actually say “I think we will be better than we were because Ek isn’t here anymore”. He also isn’t necessarily saying that we are going to be better next year than we would have been if Ek stayed.

He’s just saying that we are going to be better than we were last year. Presumably he’d say the same thing if Ek was staying around (I don’t think he’d start talking about regressing to the mean).

If you want disagree with the conclusion, fine, but I don’t see how the statement he made necessarily contradicts with offering Ek a big contract. I think you’re just reading more into the statement than what was actually there because you have an axe to grind.

100% this.
The only thing I can think of to halfway defend him staying in house is that he really does think they have and understand the blueprint that Ek used for success and are worried that bringing in someone new would disrupt that. Not saying this is right or wrong, just tossing it out there as a potential decision factor.

I guess but that whole staff was here for the debacle that was STs prior to this year. Shrug

Very good point.

Then don't offer the guy a top 2 salary if it can be replicated in-house.

I don't agree with most in this thread, and that may be because I saw a lot of bad in the special teams especially the decision making that Rhule was referring to. If KO return decisions are made prior to the kick by the coach and not the receiver, that's a problem and not normal. There are typically coached standards for when to return, when to fair catch, and when to let it go through the endzone. I share Rhule's take that we took way too many balls out of the endzone that put us inside the 20 to start drives. It happened a lot. That's what he's referring too.

Additionally, he is basically saying that next year, whether Mike is coaching here or not, they will be better because they are going to use the same system and they will be more familiar with it; all while being more disciplined in decision making for KO return. That's what the whole statement was referring to, KO return.

I completely agree with what Rhule is saying. Is it obvious that he's annoyed by whatever is going on behind the scenes? Aboslutely, but I would be too, if I offered an incredible salary increase to keep him and he's looking elsewhere.

As others have said, Ek seems like a transient. He doesn't last in one place for very long. Most of the time that is upon the individual and something within them, not the organization.

There's a lot more to this that will come out after Ek officially leaves for USC.

I don't know why you guys are freaking out they still have this guy on staff for special teams and he can tell you where to find the best chicken fried steak in a 200 mile radius of Lincoln.
