I hate the term “buddy hire” because it’s lazy and you’ll find every coach hires people they’ve worked with previously. I’d prefer to look at each hire individually and decide whether they are good or not.

That being said, the “buddy hires” Rhule made on defense and special teams have been great hires.

Satterfield sucks independent of who his friends are and the idea he’s never actually been any good anywhere should have been an indication of that.
This is probably true however....

I can't envision any OC actually getting that much more out of Sims. I mean the guy fucking sucks. Has to be the worst QB in P5.

Satterfield's working with a 4th yr QB who literally cannot catch shotgun snaps and can't look the hand-off into the RB's breadbasket. And a QB who can't look side to side on passing routes. This is JV football stuff.

I honestly don't know what a better OC could/would be doing differently. Bad WRs. Avg OL or below avg. Maybe run Sims to death until he gets injured? IDK

Doesn't appear that a different OC would have a lot of options with this shit sandwich.

They look good so far, but they had the luxury of having very good players like Newsome, Reimer, and Hugehog around to work with. Where they lacked quality options, they went out and got quality transfers to fill the gap.

Defense could fall off bigly next year when dudes like Reimer and Newsome move on
Yup, if our offense gains some traction next year the defense will fall off proportionally to make sure we still lose the majority of games.

The thing is that I’m not sure a different OC takes Sims in the portal and would likely have gone with Casey or brought in a different guy.

If Sims was an inherited guy I’d be more willing to give a pass here. The idea that they clearly wanted a transfer QB and Sims was who they landed on given all other options is a very tough pill to swallow.

Not sure about that to be honest. This scheme and staff has gotten quite a bit out of players that most of us, myself included had completely written off. Gbayor, Lenhardt, and Singleton looked really good today and I had basically zero expectations for any of them.

On the other side, both the DL and LB have looked significantly better this year. Tackling is far better across the board, too.

No we are in 100% agreement. Rhule and Satt have to own the catastrophic fuck up of picking Sims.

My point was saying that now that he's here I don't know what an OC can do with him. He's a broken QB.

What was eye-opening to me was when I looked at Satt’s resume and discovered that he was never actually CHOSEN for his previous OC gigs. He was tapped as OC after the original OCs on those teams each left for one reason or another:

“In January 2013, Nick Rolovich, who had been tapped as the Owls' new offensive coordinator, backed out of the job, and Rhule offered the position to Satterfield.“

“On January 7, 2021, it was reported that Satterfield would join new head coach Shane Beamer's staff as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at South Carolina,[20] following the sudden departure of Mike Bobo to Auburn.”
I think a lot of people are forgetting he wasn't Rhule’s first choice for his current job structure either - we had Jake Peetz lined up to probably be QB coach here before he had a change of heart.

So Sims and Satt not meshing well might partly be because it's a different arrangement than they were initially going to be in.

Great drop in. Forgot about Peetz. That was rough.

Yeah but his new OL probably sucks

His old O-Line sucks too. And he doesn't have Trey Palmer to throw to this year. Their offense generated 185 yards of total offense total and only touchdown was an interception return. We can pine for Thompson since we are dealing with Sims, but reality is whichever QB that started for us this year wouldn't have been worth a damn and we'd still be bitching about his performance costing us games. Sims or Thompson is a lose/lose proposition.
